Description
THE NIGHT PAT MURPHY DIED has been popular in St. Johns since the turn of the century, and this version includes some local touches. Alans father tom knows a lot of songs, but this is one of his favourites. Fergus OByrne taught us JOLLY ROVING TAR, a traditional shanty about a sailors unrepentant love for his lifestyle. The donkey in DONKEY RIDING is a type of large winch used to pull ropes and chains abord sailing ships. Our great friends the Barra MacNeils from Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia bring a Cape Breton touch to this. Darrells father Paddy gave us JAKEYS GIN, an unusual local song about a once well-known St. Johns bootlegger. Jakeys cover was apparently the sale of religious pictures and icons. GENERAL TAYLOR, also learned from Fergus OByrne, derides an American officer who turned traitor in the Mexican-American War. With any luck, someday well come close to capturing a bit of Ferguss unique intensity and vocal power. GREENSPOND consists of three singles, powerful Newfoundland dance tunes which evolved from Kerry polkas and English country dances. The first two are traditional, while the third was written by Geoff Panting. The piece of mouth music is from the Wesleyville area of Newfoundland. And the tune in PADDY MURPHY is the so-called Third Turn from Mussels In The Corner, a local reel. The tune in SEAGULLS is either Tancott Street or The Heights of Alma, depending on who you ask. And it rained or snowed every single day while we recorded this album.
