Description
John has been part of the upstate NY music scene since the early 1990's with bands such as Norman, Kid Dynamo and, most notably, the Explosives. After the latter group split, John settled into John Delehanty's Scarlet East Recording to begin work "Tiger Pop", his first full-length record. Brodeur's eclectic modern pop draws from such classic influences such as the Beatles, Elliott Smith, Jellyfish and Squeeze, and the resulting album is an inviting, interesting collection of "just slightly off-kilter pop music... for those of us who see the world from angles gone moderately astray." (Aiding & Abetting, 1/02)
Voted "Best Solo Musician" by the readers of Albany's Metroland magazine, John Brodeur has been heralded as a "gifted songwriter who has the rare ability to craft catchy pop hooks without relying on stock pop-song structures" (Metroland, 8/00).
John's music has appeared on compilation CDs for Magnet magazine and Shut Eye Records. Along with his new band, The Suggestions, John has landed high-profile opening slots with They Might Be Giants, Pernice Brothers, Angie Aparo, Champale and the Churchills. The band rounded out 2001 with a showcase at the CMJ Music Marathon and an appearance at the "International Pop Overthrow" festival in NYC.
John recently contributed a track to "He Was Fab: A Loving Tribute to George Harrison", available on Jealousy Records (AND here at CDBaby). The Suggestions "Mix Tape" EP is due this December and work on the follow-up to "Tiger Pop" will begin in the spring of 2003.
REVIEWS:
"Pop records like this may be scarce, but when theya re of this caliber, they won't remain under the radar for long." (Performing Songwriter, 11/01)
"One wild, creative, imaginative ride... Brodeur is a cross between Rufus Wainwright and Beck." (Indie-Music.com, 7/01)
"It's hard to get enough of this one - put this on your want list." (Shake It Up!, 7/01)
"Something of a phenomenon... This is one mighty album." (hEARd, 6/01)
"Brodeur's solo debut is as confident, entertaining song cycle... Brodeur successfully blends strains of earnest bedroom pop with Beatles-beholden studio grandness." (Metroland, 12/00)
"...a richly rewarding recording - 11 tunes of ambitious, shimmering pop that stands up against most like-mided major-label efforts. Snappy, crackling-good pop." (Albany Times Union, 12/00)
