Description
"You can tell what is and what isn't rock & roll . To be the real thing, a song has to have an awareness of rock history. It has to have the beat, that undulating rhythm. Even while it feels like history, it has to say something new. And most important, it has to have crammed into it all the poignancy and excitement of youth, because that's what it's really all about."
Pete Townshend
Mixing elements of hard rock, soul and 70s grit, One Hand Free is making an impact. Emotionally charged vocals, soaring guitars, the grind of the Hammond organ, and a rock solid rhythm section fuse, creating a powerful and undeniable appeal.
As a recent slew of shows in New York City (with many more to come) has shown, One Hand Free can not only keep up with the best live bands the Northeast has to offer, they are among them. Certainly, while their sound is reminiscent of bands their parents likely listened to, they also bring something current to the table. In the words of one NYC rock club owner, "They're like the Allman Brothers...but new!"
This band is following a tradition that is encountered less and less in mainstream music nowadays. They're emotionally invested. They understand the meaning of the word show. It's not just about playing the songs; it's about making a connection. Go see One Hand Free live, and the source of their charm becomes apparent. They love what they're doing and they want, more than anything, for you to be part of the action.
Their self-titled debut album has been released by the Halt Music Company label, based in Austin, Texas (www.haltmusic.com). It has already generated a great deal of interest both regionally and nationally. From the opening punch of Now You Know , the heartfelt sway of Days, to the cheeky bravado of School, this album will grab you by the lapels and give you a stern talking-to..............and you'll love every minute.
Andrew Blowen (lead vocals/ keyboards)
An accomplished solo artist and veteran of many New England bands, Andrew has spent the last fifteen years impressing audiences with his evocative songwriting and compelling vocals. As the principal writer and lyricist, he takes chances and expresses emotion without compromise or timidity. Countless performances have provided him an opportunity to hone his skills as a front man, as though he were letting the audience in on the juiciest secret ever.
Geoff Taylor (bass)
Sent on a mission by the gods of rock and roll, Geoff Taylor has come directly from the year 1970 to bring you the muscular bass lines you have been missing. Geoff has dedicated his life to pursuing the mystical art of the riff, as practiced by masters such as Mel Schacher, John Paul Jones, and Tim Bogert. Having plied his wares in a variety of incarnations, from solo artist to leader of acclaimed riff and rollers The Soul Chemists, Geoff has found the perfect setting to unleash the power of his musical girth as the bassist for One Hand Free.
Josh DiJoseph (guitars)
Comfortable in almost any musical situation, Josh draws from influences such as John Scofield, Warren Haynes, and Pat Metheney. As a guitarist, Josh adds an unmistakable element to One Hand Free with gripping leads and soul-stirring slide technique, cultivated by many years of touring and hundreds of performances with his old band, Snappin' Gomez. As a producer/engineer, he has helped mold the One Hand Free sound into what it is today.
Kelly Bower (drums)
Kelly is here to do one thing, lay the track for the One Hand Free train to steam down. Powered by the diverse inspiration of Matt Abts, Billy Martin, JoJo Mayer and Eric Kretz, Kelly has scores of shows under his belt, spanning many genres. Also formerly of Snappin' Gomez, he is at once powerful and laid back, keeping the goal squarely in his sights.
