Description
Utilizing elements of trip hop, gothic poetry, and traditional eastern music, the songs of The Hungry Ghost peek into worlds filled with mysterious characters in strange situations.
Having been compared to artists of a similar brooding persuasion ("imagine Lou Reed produced by Tricky", says one reviewer), the ghost admits to influences such as Edgar Allan Poe, Leonard Cohen, and Portishead.
"I love art that evokes a sense of romantic terror," confesses the Singapore-born songsmith. "Though these songs have personal and political significance, my main aim is to take the listener on a surreal journey."
His self-titled CD begins with Haunted, a modern protest song with spooky synth interludes. It is narrated by a man who sounds slightly unhinged, whose belief system is being threatened by the "visions" and "voices" that disturb him.
Heaven is a Dark Place dreams of an exotic paradise where angels "love to dress in black" and night is perpetual. With its trip hop beats, bluesy guitar hook, and rolling bassline, this is a song that's, as one DJ put it, "hard to get out of your head".
Other highlights include Evil Never Dies, a revenge fable with creepy dueling basslines. This track features a guest vocal by Detroit techno-goth artist The Impaler, who shows up to warn the listener, "luxury can be a vampire in disguise".
