GIRLS ON TOP are...
"...One of the best live acts you're ever going to see" (rockreview.net)
"...Comically demonic...very weird, not to mention extremely vulgar and funny" (NME)
"...Trashy, glitzy, foul-mouthed and frisky...they could eat The Donnas for breakfast and Sahara Hotnights for brunch..." (Kerrang!)
"...They deliver first-rate garage punk..." (Classic Rock)
GIRLS ON TOP are...
...gathering a reputation for a pulse-racing and vulgar stage-act, with songs that are rock-driven pastiches of modern living combined with an outrageous, sleazy sex-appeal that makes the New York Dolls look positively vegetarian.
Whether it be smack, gay sex, plastic surgery, suicide or fetishism GIRLS ON TOP turn taboo into a humorous mix of glam, cabaret, punk and rock 'n roll.
GIRLS ON TOP are...
...Lead singer Vicki De Vice, who writhes and taunts the audience, masturbates with a Hoover and gives birth to a one-eyed baby with a silver head.
Vicki, born in Southend, is a relative of Richard Dadd, the mad Victorian fairy painter who murdered his father, and paints murals - including the one in Camden mentioned in Nick Hornby's 'High Fidelity'. Her first band was 'Stone Cold Gone' (West Coast) playing harp and backing vocals. She then wrote lyrics and fronted 'Greasy Pig', later called 'Backslider' - with Toby from Primal Scream on drums.
"I have this recollection of me as a child, about seven, dancing round the room accompanied by my sister on a plastic guitar. I'd be dressed in just my dad's scarf, safety-pinned together as a mini-skirt. Is that pervy or what?"
...Bassist and biker babe, Amanda Pukon who pouts and throbs magnificently on zebra-skinned platforms while dodging Vicki's whip.
Amanda, born in Coatbridge, near Glasgow, was drawn early to the vibrating shiny chrome of bikes and wearing sweaty leather. Escaping to London, she joined pop/punk outfit `Virago' and then `Fahrenheit 451'. She's so dedicated to performing that she once kept playing after falling off the stage whilst ogling the male guitarist who at the time was sporting her mini-kilt.
"I'm a member of the Red Herrings MCC and at a rally in Belgium I was dared to table dance in the marquee, so I obliged, while a hat was passed round, I got five euros for two minutes, that's a hundred and fifty Euros an hour (100). Not bad going".
...Redheaded French chick Liddy Lustre, who squeals and thrashes her pearly Ludwig kit to death.
Lydie, born in Tours, in the Loire valley, was soon seduced by the excitement of Paris. Here she began her rock n' roll career drumming with 'Pigalle On/off' and performed at the Cithea Theatre. After a move to London, she joined bands 'Catholics In London' (rock), 'Hotalacio' (industrial) and 'Scarlet In Heaven' (indie) and played sessions with Toyah, Girlschool, Take That & Tom Jones.
"I don't really like animals, only maybe dogs. I'm French, and it's tradition there to eat them not pet them. I've eaten horse before, it's delicious. People here think that's awful, but show me a mouse, and I'll scream the house down. I went camping once, it was a disaster. I came back to find a cow sitting & shitting on my tent. I'm scared of cows too."
...token white male Neil Downe, who frantically fingers his guitar neck whilst trying to preserve some masculine dignity.
Neil, born in Long Eaton, near Nottingham played his first gig with 'Cremation' at Happy Vale, a local mental hospital. In London he played in bands including the 'Deadbeats' (with whom he has recorded & toured France), the 'GTs,' 'Plummet Airlines' and 'Big Bad Wolf'. Neil has jammed with Johnny Thunders in Paris and he was recommended to join Girls on Top by Bill Hurley from the Inmates. Neil plays on Hurley's "Angel to Memphis" solo album.
"Many people ask me how I feel about playing in a band with three girls. "Well, I get stuff like " Neil, can you carry this for me, I've got stilettos on." And I do miss talking about football & cricket. Plus, for a while, they kept insisting that I wear a dress on stage...I mean, with these knees? I don't rule it out but nowadays it has to be a special occasion".
December 1997, the CD EP on the G.O.T label was released, featuring the cult classic "Barbie Is A Smackhead". Along came Camden's Nana Records with a vinyl compilation of female artists (Spy 51, Gertrude, Some Sonic) and G.O.T's cottaging anthem "Boys Meet". 1998 saw the appearance of GIRLS ON TOP on TV as the fictitious band 'Trash' on Kavanagh KC. 'Ovulater', the tasteless CD LP, also on the G.O.T label, was spawned at the end of 1999, and kicked off with "Fuckhead". It features the X-Ray Spex inspired, "Head in the oven", the hard and heavy "Monster baby", and the seedy slavery of "Trainee Sex-God".
GIRLS ON TOP hit Paris in spring 2000 to a riotous reception with queues round the block. They played a national biker rally, 'Smoking Dog' in Epping, an outrageous private party in the Oxfordshire countryside and filmed a webcast for the Mean Fiddler Organisation at LA2. During all this were performances with the UK Subs and The Vibrators at the Underworld, Monarch and a Xmas special at the Borderline which was rammed.
2001, and more wild shows with The Parkinsons, the Celtic Bones & 999, also a memorable gig at Charlie Harper's birthday party at the 100 Club. GIRLS ON TOP finally made New York City in August for a four date tour including CBGBs & Don Hills with bad girls Vulgaras, and so impressed the locals that they made the cover of 'NY Waste' magazine. A live video shot at Long Island is due to be broadcast on a Manhattan cable channel.
2002: signed with Riverside Records, who released "Ovulater", now including stage faves "He's Been Around" and "Barbie Is A Smackhead". GOT also shot their first music video "Mess" and terrorised London with The Parkinsons at The Garage and Mika Bomb at the Metro Club, before going on a UK tour with Rachel Stamp, followed by their own headline tour!
2003: GOT support Screamin' Stukas in London and play the Punk Aid festival with The Damned. "Ovulater" gets released in France, Germany, the Benelux and Scandinavia, which starts GOT's invasion of the Continent...
