Description
BEN HULAN, Songwriter. Ben grew up in a musical family with an affinity for American folk music, but his real interest in bluegrass began in 1993 with his three-year membership as a resident actor/musician at Lime Kiln Arts in Lexington, Virginia. Besides the allure of the music, Ben found the culture of bluegrass to be uniquely supportive: Ben always felt encouraged, challenged and welcome.
These experiences helped Ben redefine his own concept of the essence of music-making. Instead of recording a typical songwriter album (vocals and guitar), Ben invited 16 friends to help him make The Present Plays a record in that spirit.
The result is an exciting and eclectic collection of 11 original songs (and one fiddle tune) celebrating togetherness, separation, and the perception of those distances between.
Ben is currently promoting this album with his new band, Sugar Grove.

Awards garnered (so far)...
"Saturday Time" won honorable mention in the adult/contemporary category of the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest, 2004. (Ben is extremely happy to claim this award, but truth be told, he is neither "adult", NOR "contemporary".)
A home recording of "Riptide" was the recipient of an Honor Award in The Great American Song Contest, 2003. ("Thanks! That's what really got me fired up to make this record!" -b)
A demo of "Orbiting" was chosen from a large pool of submissions to be the first track on the compilation album, "Focus Presents: Capital Acoustics, Vol. 3". That album is a collection of 20 songs from 20 DC-area songwriters, produced by songwriting hero, Steve Key in 2002.
