Description
Suzanne McDermott posseses one of the most assured and melifluous female voices on the contemporary folk scene. In a certain mood she sounds akin to the young Joan Baez. There's a great deal of pleasure in hearing McDermott's voice effortlessly sweep and swoop.
McDermott is one hundred percent original in her style and writing, which, in a genre of frequent copycats, is refreshing. She has penned some of the most remarkable songs of the past 50 years and ranks in the first echelon of songwriters. She is not timid about infusing her poetry with strong messages, sometimes political. "Goose Steppin'," as its title implies, is strongly pointed commentary on the current political scene. Listen carefully, because the songs have more than one level of meaning. There's a passion play going on in these dozen original songs that may sound superficially like love songs until you delve into her images and metaphors.
The Glory, her 5th album, was recorded in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, produced by Ankie Keultjes and features a fine array of Dutch musicians on baritone and tenor saxophone, percussion, bass, piano and bandonion It was released in Europe on CRS/Rounder Europe January 2003 and is available as US import through CDBaby.com
Earlier work that put Suzanne on the songwriting map include "The 3 Dreams of J. Robert Oppenheimer", "The California Sun", "When You Became My Child", "The Roswell Incident" and "Great Day."
Performing Songwriter Magazine included earlier albums in their "Top D.I.Y", Sing Out! Magazine calls Suzanne "a serious songwriter deserving of attention."
