Biographies
J. Thompson - Guitarist, writer, producer
Bay area guitarist, songwriter and producer J. Thompson brings over 20 years of music industry experience to the creation of "Romantic Night." Thompson began his professional music career as a teenager in the 1970's, as the guitarist for a group managed by Tommy Smothers, Clark and Marilyn Burroughs. In 1972, at the age of 19, Thompson quickly gained national recognition for his musicianship when he performed with the group on the Merv Griffin show.
In the late 70's and 80's Thompson's expertise on guitar, bass and drums led him to participate in a wide range of projects. As a session bassist Thompson worked with producers Jim Gains and Allen Tousaint. Outside of the studio, Thompson played bass with the Jorge Santana band in the late 70's and 80's and with the Pablo Cruise band in the 90's.
Thompson moved into the adult contemporary/adult alternative world in 1989 with his hit album, "Tell Me Tell Me." The Gavin Report (7/89) described the album as "One of the year's best independent AA releases." The album, produced by Thompson and featuring Marc Russo on sax included 2 singles written by Thompson that charted in the top 20. The instrumental "Peaceful World" played on national new age and jazz radio stations for 3 years.
In addition to his guitar playing, Thompson is known for his soulful writing style and his production expertise. Thompson attributes much of his production and writing style to the work he did with New Orleans legend, Allen Tousaint. Thompson worked with Tousaint to record Jorge Santana's album "Three Mile Island" and played bass for Tousaint's own studio band.
