Description
Blood Sugar hails out of Oakland, California, records in South Central L.A. and makes things happen wherever. They're a rock band. Lead singer Xavier is black and
most of the time he has a Japanese guy named Massa Kohama on guitar. The rest of the band alternates players. Xavier describes the sound as 'Afro-punk': rock guitar
over rebel funk grooves or to quote him, "rock & roll from a Negro perspective". The live show is sick. They're not f#%king around. Xavier is an extremely self-assured
veteran of the music scene. He may or may not have signed a huge deal with Interscope a while back. He says, "I swear to God, we wreck shop when we get down live".
His attitude comes from a similar place as Evil Kinevel's, you see, X almost died in a car wreck three years ago. That's all true. He has scars and an outstanding
$500,000.00 hospital bill to prove. Check Cedars. More stats: L-A.P.D. said his car flipped 16 1/2 times, the 1/2 meaning it landed on him. He was in a coma for three weeks in Cedar Siani's I.C.U. Doctor's considered amputating his playing
hand because they couldn't operate while he was unconscious and his hand was starting to rot. All true. Things get blurry here-as X has a tendency to lie. How many rods
and pins and broken bones seems to vary from day to day.
The album "Smack, Crack, Sugar, Shit Pop" was recorded in
six weeks in his Blackball Studio in the hood. The album was produced by Winston Black for blackballuniverse.com The label is owned by Winston Black and Xavier who are probably the same person, pending legal matters aside. The bloodsugar sound is aggressive but sometimes beautiful. Songs like The million dollar hoe. Ray parker and You must pay, are a unique blend of punk, funk, ska and melodic wizardry. When they downshift on tracks like Under the sea. War children and Jesus makes miracles, head nodding groves give way to anthemic bliss and wailing guitar assaults from Masa Kohama (Asian guitar hero). They then pay homage to their bay area roots with a crushing performance of a song entitled Dope fiend drama. The bands ability to
cover such scope may be partly due to singer songwriter Xaviers' bi-polar aesthetic."It's time to bring real frustration and real anger back to music. People wanna make fake
positive crap so they can smile through this massive propaganda attack by the big brother neo-facists. but I'm not gonna let 'em". That's a direct quote from X'. Blood Sugars'
music is defiantly hard. But not that: hard-equals-loud style. It's hard like: muthaf#%kas-who-can-play can-play-hard type style. An original and refreshing hybrid of punk rock, soul and melodic pop.
