Description
Color and Talea's third and newest album, Project Mayhem, clearly lives up to its name as a sublimely chaotic blend of synthesized funk and hyper jazz, with a splash of electronic effects. Anthony Buonpane's masterful and edgy alto-sax, Ben Das' funky bass riffs, and Adam Sturtevant's lightening-fast drumming swirl together to create a truly frenzied concoction. Color and Talea's musical talent shines through as much as their ability to precisely interact with each other, a skill that only comes when musicians are completely in tune with each other as they perfectly follow each other's split-second changes and playfully dance around each other's off the wall solos. The electronic elements come in especially strong in certain tracks, such as "Mista Barista," which includes a vocal mimicking of a DJ scratching a record with a touch of bizarre effects. The band's jazz element comes through clearly in "Launcho," a perfect showcase for their impeccable coordination and creativity. Buonpane's sizzling alto-sax is the wasabi in the group, as it not only stands out the most, but stings you one second and gently soothes you the next, letting the listener know who's really in control. As a complete counter-opposite to the screeching and ADHD sax are Das' solid and ultra-funky bass riffs which accompany Sturtevant's quick and precise drumming. This drum-and-bass element is demonstrated in Project Mayhem's most interesting track, "Decomposition," which also makes use of crazy electronic effects. Color and Talea's impressive musical skill would have probably produced a great album even without all the eccentric and electronic elements, which are really the icing on the cake that helped make Project Mayhem that much more mind- blowing. -Northeast Performer (April05)
"On Project Mayhem, Color and Talea mix up styles old and new in the
name of group improvisation. It's a potent blend." -Eli Wolf, Director of A&R, Blue Note Records
"Ear-catching and mind-bending, C&T rips it up on their new CD." -Sean Hoess, Owner/Manager, Velour Recordings
