Description
ConGa Punks are an incredible Power Station equipped with various songwriters, composers, arrangers, vocalists, and multifaceted instrumentalists...In the distance, you hear their approach, both infectious and habitual. The beats mixed nicely with all sorts of sound. Sometimes-occasional wailing vocals blending in with some sparkling guitar work.
This band is going somewhere and going there fast. If this release is any indication of their musical intent, the ConGa PunKs are sure to stimulate all five senses and Seven Continents. Here they span all sides of that so-called crossover. This collection will make you remember how good music can be, but before you attempt to categorize their sound, they will make you want to hit a dance floor unsure of what to do next. You will find yourself in the possession of a beautiful keyboard driven vamp that lets you wind up and back down again. The most unusual thing about this work is that it is so complete. It gels together in a way you would expect the most professional of albums to.

Artist History
The ConGa Punks formed in Camarillo, California, when drummer Cougar Estrada decided to put some of his own ideas to the test. ConGa PunKs were created with the collective belief that if you write and perform great songs, people will listen. The band's debut album is produced by Cougar Estrada and mixed by Nik Green, ( keyboardist formally of Blue Murder fame ) along with Cougar Estrada. This work highlight's the band's strong points; rhythmic foundation, honest songwriting, great musicianship and a scientific yet straightforward musical approach. The result is an album which ranges from the acoustic / simplistic "The Right" to the serious and reflective "Love, Causes, Pain." The journey continues from the Cuban Songo inspired Ya Te Vas! to the hard edged Hollywood's Heaven. Believing that hard work yields results, the newly-founded ConGa PunKs spent their first two years together writing, and rehearsing in the Camarillo, CA garage. Recording took place at the beautiful Santa Maria "Spirit Hills Studio" owned and operated by the great Jazz vibist Fred Raulston. Produced by Cougar Estrada, Final mix down and mastering at the Isla Vista, CA studio of Nik Green.

Guajira
ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah
4x
(Guajira Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey)
She lives different lives
Going out with different guys
One in the sun the other for the shade
Oh it's ok
(oooooooooh)
Out on the night
A yellow shirt that shines real bright
Showing signs that you can play
When this is not a game
Yes in time
We will grow
Then look back
To find out there's
Nothing
At that time
We will know
That there was
Always something
Young people getting drunk
Lo lo lo looking to explore what's new
Overdose on fast food junk
So who are you?
(I thought you knew)
Confident and wise
No clue look what you've done
Stutter a story without an end
It's not a surprise
(You're telling lies)
2x
Yes in time
We will grow
Then look back
To find out
There's nothing
At that time
We will know
That there was
Always something
Momma told me not to go out and play
She said go find the one that'll make you smile when you're gray (aaaah)
You know tomorrow's mess comes from our decision's today
No matter what I say you'll have to find your own way
4x
(Guajira Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey)
Walk around with a shield.
Only to sit and watch while others think
Staring at the shadows on the wall.
Not seeing anything.
Haircut and all
Clothes perfect to a T
Attractive scent at one time
New shoes with history
3x
Yes in time
We will grow
Then look back
To find out
There's nothing
At that time
We will know
That there was
Always something

Growing up is tough. The stresses of family life, and the feeling of wanting to be independent can take a toll on a young person. These song lyrics were inspired by party goers and clubbers who shun responsiblitity. Taking time for granted, they waste their lives thinking that they are immortal. When maturity finally strikes, they come to the realization that they could have done things differently if they would have only struck a balance...

La Lalalala
Listen my daughter may all go well
I have a book to read
It contains the story of what occured
If I could have foreseen
What it was going to do
I would have changed myself
Don't know what one does to receive this
I spend countless nights without sleep
Keep it up, keep it up!
Yeah keep it up, yeah keep it up!
Keep it up!
Delia to the Gods! Delia to the Gods!
Sure I will miss you. Delia to the Gods!
Delia to the Gods! Delia to the Gods!
In my memory (of you) lies my/the faith!
Listen, look may it all go well
The final part I've yet to read
Our time has been cut short
The hour has come
I sing it from here
Delia don't worry about me
Delia to the Gods! Delia to the Gods!
Sure I will miss you. Delia to the Gods!
Delia to the Gods! Delia to the Gods!
In my memory (of you) lies my/the faith!
Keep it up, keep it up!
Yeah keep it up, yeah keep it up!
Keep it up!

Cougar came up with the idea for the song lyrics. Write them in Spanish about his terminally ill mother. Kevin was tasked with the penning of the words during her final months. He got writers block because he became emotionally involved. So he stopped production! He told Cougar he felt uncomfortable writing about her as if she were already gone. His final visit with her, and through a sea of tears that soaked the lyric sheets, he found the inspiration to finish. She only got to hear the demo track missing the words. But we know she will always stop to listen when we perform this beautiful hommage to a fabulous human being. Adios means goodbye in Spanish from the Latin "Dios" plural for God. Separating the letter A from the word now changes the meaning to: "To the Gods Delia" or politically correct "Delia to God"
Dedicated solely to the memory of Delia Estrada Jan 20, 1942 to Sept 16, 2000 "Siguele Y Veras"

We are avid fans of the Cuban sound "Songo" made popular by the group "Los Van Van" predecessor to the new "Timba" sound coming out of Fidel Castro's backyard. We added a hard rock rap section in Spanish [ utilizing idioms and expressions ] ala the Puerto Rican Metal masters, Puya! We experiment with vocal pitch bending, finally bringing it home to the soothing sound of the South American Cumbia rhythm. We found our sound in the writing, construction and recording of this piece which was originally to be just an instrumental jam.
Why Did You Act Like That?
I know something all about you
Strung out searching for a rescue
Calling home you know there's no one
Don't you know I once did care [alaleeleelalaleelalalala]
Yeah, why did you act like that?
Ah, check it out now
Don't you know that the word is all around town
Oh yeah yeah, yeah why did you act like that?
Ah, check it out now
Don't you know that the word is all around town
Dead now nothing to look back on
Time out what is it for?
Spoiled with jewels and plenty of them
Hoping everyone looks your way
Oh yeah, why did you act like that?
Ah, check it out now
Don't you know that the word is all around town
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah why did you act like that?
Ah, check it out now
Don't you know that the word is all around town
No time for this no time for that
But plenty of time to party phat
Did you think I wouldn't care
Wasted moments heartless stare

Malcom Ian Peters brought this idea to a ConGa PunKs rehearsal. A pure bass line. It was so good we thought he either copied or stole it from somewhere! The rest is history. The band collectively added condiments like a chef in a kitchen. It was the hardest song to mix due to it's simplicity and musical direction. Here you will find what the ConGa PunKs are all about!
Love, Causes, Pain
Uh...
Sleeping late
Eating less
Drinking too much
Watching time end
Looking straight down
Laughing with no reason
Wondering why
Crying out loud
Sleeping fine
Eating more
Smoking too much
Watching T.V.
Looking straight up
Laughing with a reason
Ready to die
Crying inside
Hey Hey Hey (what's your name?)
Hey Hey Hey (who's to blame?)
Hey Hey Hey (this is me!)
Hey Hey Hey (you're to blame!)
I'm not insane
Cold in the rain
Thoughts in my brain
Love, causes, pain
If this is what its all about
Then no one will ever doubt
If it's truly who you are
Maybe then will you go far
Searching out for what you think
Sure time passes with a blink
And to finish no remorse
You're the one with the locked doors
If it's what it's all about
Then no one will ever doubt
If it's truly who I am
Maybe then I'll understand
Searching now for what I think
All time passes with a blink
Now I'm finished no excuse
I'm the one who got abuse
Hey Hey Hey (what's your name?)
Hey Hey Hey (who's to blame?)
Hey Hey Hey (this is me!)
Hey Hey Hey (you're to blame!)
Hey Hey Hey (what's your name?)
Hey Hey Hey (who's to blame?)
Hey Hey Hey (this is me!)
Hey Hey Hey (you're to blame!)
I'm not insane
Cold in the rain
Thoughts in my brain
Love, causes, pain
I'm not insane

What was the motivation for the song? What do the lyrics mean? Where was the song written? How long did it take to write it? How long to record? How many takes? etc...Easy, easy wait a minute!
Ok this song deals with three separate issues. A depressed family member, a terminally ill family member, and the songwriter trying to deal with it all. It's always hard to face reality. Love, Causes, Pain was written out of confusion and for closure. It brings to the surface the realization that only we ourselves have the power to face and heal the self!
Minor Tale
Well you're out on the town
Wearing that smile that made you famous
After all this while I'm still not sure
What your game was
I guess that makes me a sucker
It's an honest mistake
Well it must have been your diamonds
That split the roof and tore my eyes out
Don't know what it was
That made me move
I just had to find out
As I drew closer
I could hear the silence call
So I took the fall
She said forever test my affections
Leave me in silent darkness
To break my convictions
She's just a woman without any shame
A simple twist of fate.
Hey
Well she's out on the town
Again, with that, smile that made her famous
Just another drink
And she'll forget where the pain was
She said forever test my affection
Leave me in silent darkness
To break my conviction
She's just a woman without any shame
A simple twist of fate.
He's just a woman without any shame
A simple twist of fate.

This song proved to be a challenge. Musically it's quite complex. Scratchin', flute, and background noise give it the unique texture. The lyrics delve into the tabu subject of sexuality. Who is she? Who is he? Who are we?
I Explode
In the night's while I'm asleep
I dream about you and that guy, creep
Kissing behind that bushy tree
I feel a little uneasy and I want to pee
(And I)
Explode
(I want to I want to)
Explode
In the day while I'm awake
I stare at the phone with a lot of hate
I call you up get no reply
I slam the phone down start to cry
(And I)
Explode
(I want to I want to)
Explode
(Why do I always have to)?
Explode
(I want to I want to)
Explode
Check it out
I cry I cry it happened again
What's a man to do now I'm laughing too?
I cry I cry it happened again
What's a man to do now I'm laughing too?
I cry I cry it happened again
What's a man to do now I'm laughing too?
I cry I cry it happened again
What's a man to do now I'm laughing too?
Now I'm walking all alone
Still I wonder what the hell went wrong
Was it me or something I said?
I don't give a shit all I see is red
(And I)
Explode
he explodes
(I want to I want to)
Explode
he explodes
(Why do you give me a reason to)
Explode
he explodes
(I want to I want to)
Explode
he explodes
(You give me a reason to)
Explode

Girl dumps guy. Guy can't emotionally deal. Guy's oblivious to what happened!
Originally this song was written by Dan Zimmerman as a joke. A fun song to mess around with. After several incarnations it turned out to be not half-bad!
Hollywood's Heaven
H O L L Y W O O D
While all the boys are kickin' back
actin' cool
Homeless and the hookers
out setting the mood!
I love this troubled city
for the people that you meet
Those lovely little darlings
strut it up and down the street
Further into town
Seen graffiti on it's walls
Hey man can you tell me
what's up with it all?
Jump back look at that!
Brother spare a dime?
Jump back look at that!
I do this all the time!
Jump back look at that!
Ain't it plain to see?
Jump back look at that!
Hollywood's heaven to me
Jump back look at that!
This place is full of bars
Jump back look at that!
Nightclubs, walk of stars
Jump back look at that!
Soon you will agree
Jump back look at that!
Hollywood's the place to be!
So I'm walking down the street
I see a young girl on her knees
A drunk boy yelling fuck
Drag kings with bad luck
A black and white on break
Gothic widow at stake
Young couple having wine
Toast to dinner ends on time
Shopping lady with her cell
Little kids show and tell
This is what I came to see
Plain and simple like me
Spitting on the curb
Condom litter what nerve
Change has past me by
Hollywood is where I die
ahhhhhhhahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Home is where the heart is
So my soul is here for good
Never mind the suburbs
Nothing like the hood!
When you get your chance
Go down so you will see
Hollywood is heaven
Yeah it's the place to see!
Jump back look at that!
Brother spare a dime?
Jump back look at that!
I do this all the time!
Jump back look at that!
Ain't it plain to see?
Jump back look at that!
Hollywood's for me
Jump back look at that!
This place is full of bars
Jump back look at that!
Nightclubs, walk of stars
Jump back look at that!
Soon you will agree
Jump back look at that!
Hollywood's the place to be!
Jump back look at that!
Brother spare a dime?
Jump back look at that!
I do this all the time!
Jump back look at that!
Ain't it plain to see?
Jump back look at that!
Hollywood's Heaven for me
Jump back look at that!
This place is full of bars

There is a homeless guy sitting on a park bench. Across the street, a businessman boards a bus. For a moment, they both stare each other down. Each wondering what it would be like to trade places for a day. The homeless guy gets up and goes to work cleaning windshields at an intersection. Lunchtime he goes to the local soup kitchen where he meets up with his friends. Back to the streets pandering money on the boulevard. The sun sets and he finally goes to sleep on cardboard under a highway.
The business stresses at work, boss is on his ass. Deadlines, long hours away from home. He wonders why he has no time to socialize. Back home, he goes to sleep in a nice bed. Next morning they stare each other down...It was just a dream; the businessman is late for work. He gets in his car and drives to the bus stop. You see there is no homeless man, just a businessman's fantasy to be free to live in Hollywood's Heaven.
Your Way
YeeeeeeeHaa!
Hitch a ride to Mexico
Ven apurate senorita pues vamanos
Take you south to the border and let you loose
Find you under a red light
Mama what's the use
Beyond the skies black and blue
Where do we go now dont have a clue?
Back in my car on a journey that's too far
And out on the wayside
It's getting old.
So go your way
We will live for this time
To find a place
Where one needs to be
Show me how
To get out somehow
Missing you
As I fade away
Spend out lives in this phase
Until we expire in this haze
Another decision comes to mind
Probably never find the time
Go your way
And we'll live for this time
I'll find my place
Where I need to be
Show me how
To get out of here
Missing you
As I fade away
5 4 3 2 1
We go thru mazes all the time
Turning left and turning right
How do we figure out?
What this place is all about
I know were turning left
So follow our lead
Or we'll stay in here
We'll play our way out
To the right
To where it's all clear!!!
Now we come to the close
Anxiety level never rose
Next time we'll be clever
And never boast
For only the chosen
We will blame the most
Go your way
And we'll live for this time
I'll find my place
Where I need to be
Show me how
To get out of here
Missing you
As I fade away
Go your way
And we'll live for this time
I'll find my place
Where one I need to be
Show me how
To get out of here
Missing you
As I fade away

The labyrinth of existence. Intermeshed with the the conscious and unconscious. Cougar Estrada delivers a romantic vocal approach to complete the package. The original demo of this song was aggressive and rude. Now we just want you to go the makeout point and put the song on repeat in the car....
The Right
[SongLyric]
I can tell by the way that you're lookin' there
Trouble would be just a stare away
Like a fool I fell for your game
Don't you know mama now I'm not the same
Hey California
I tried to warn ya
Hey California
That nobody owns ya
But all I want to know is
Who put that stuff all in your head?
Now I roam your shores alone
Wondering if I'm ever going home
Can't you see that it's killing me?
I never dreamt this would come to be
Hey California
I tried to warn ya
Hey California
That nobody owns ya
But all I want to know is
Who put that stuff all in your head? ( your head? )
Mama you ain't got the right
To be lookin' that good ( lookin' that good ) tonight
I said mama you ain't got it right
To be makin' me put up this fight
2x
Walkin' down the street
Checkin' out everyone that you meet
Hey woman don't you know that you're with me
Solo
Walkin' down the street
Checkin' out everyone that you meet

Ah! How she loves the attention! Even though you are her boyfriend, she continues to flirt with whomever. Why not? She is a beautiful woman and no one really owns anyone. You express your discomfort and she blows it off! You're jealous and insecure. Until trust is violated and then back to square one you go...

[SongInfo]
Guaguanco is one of the most popular styles of rumba that is still danced today. Rumba developed among the different African ethnic groups, primarily from Central and West Africa, who were brought to Cuba as slaves. Guaguanco, like the other rumba styles Yambu and Columbia, developed in the middle 1800s. Guaguanco is played in 2/4 or 4/4 tempo giving it a moderate to fast tempo. Guaguanco is danced by a male-female couple and consists of a flirtatious, sexual game with a distinctive body movement called the vacunao (pelvic thrust) performed by the male dancer. Dance historians have noted that the vacunao is found in other African based dances in Latin America and the guaguanco maybe derived from the Yuka, a secular dance of the Bantu people.
The couple begins to dance. The male dancer is more active as he circles around her without touching her. The dance climaxes as the male attempts to give the vacuano when the female is unprepared to avoid it. Much of her dancing expertise resides in her ability to entice the male while skillfully avoiding being touched by his vacunao. (Vernon Boggs 1992)
By the turn of the century, rumba had migrated to the black working class neighborhoods of Cuban cities. The music consisted mainly of percussive instruments including drums, wooden boxes (cajones), tables and chairs, spoons and jars. During the first half of the 20th century rumba bands were comprised of singers, one or more large drums (tumbadora-conga and tumbadora-salidor), a small conga drum (quinto) and a pair of wooden sticks (palitos) that were beaten against the side of one of the drums. Claves (two hardwood sticks that are struck together) and the Cajones were often added to the ensemble. You can still see remnants of guaguanco in the hip and pelvic motions of of today's salsa dancers when the couple separates and each person dances "freestyle".

[ TRACK 12 ] The word Samba, in Portuguese, was derived from semba, a word common to many West African bantu languages. The African slaves brought to Brazil during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, the word had a variety of meanings. It meant to pray, or invoke the spirits of the ancestors, or the Gods of African pantheon. As a noun, it could mean a complaint, a cry, or something like "the blues".

Bata drums are a family of sacred, double-headed drums from the Yoruba culture in present-day Nigeria and Dahomey. Bata drums were brought to Cuba and are now also played in the U.S. and elsewhere. West Africa is the origin of the traditional Bat drums. These drums were brought to Cuba and the New World during the African Diaspora. The Bat are said to belong to the Orisha Chango.
