"Kick-ass multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter...an abundance of heart to accompany a remarkable voice."--San Diego CityBeat
"A thoroughly charming debut that begs for repeated listens...The most impressive instrument is the young singer's dulcet voice, pure in pitch and beautifully earnest...her words reveal a deep intelligence and fierce wit. she bares her soul, but never in a gratuitously confessional manner."--San Diego Union Tribune
"'Secretary Waltz'...has caught the attention of thinkers, nontraditionalists, artists, and others. Her sound seems unclassifiable...a refreshing departure from mainstream female vocalists."--Today's Local News
"A great CD all the way through."--KKSM Palomar College Radio
"Owes a lot to Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez...but also to the DIY post-punk aesthetic and neo-folk of Elliott Smith and Aimee Mann. 'Trees by Your House' is haunted by a Tom Waitsian accordion...'Give You' has a hip, '40s jazz shuffle driven by upright bass and complemented by violin...Filled with cool Rhodes keyboard, tinkling acoustic piano, brushed drums and even a tiny bit of fuzz guitar...The results indeed do belie categorization."--San Diego CityBeat
"A diverse sound that taps on true talent. And with the backing of acclaimed Matt Curreri & the Exfriends, the folk-indie-rock group was a sure shot that will create an even bigger buzz."--Today's Local News
SECRETARY WALTZ (Spinster Recordings 2004) is Joanie's first full length album. She wrote and produced everything herself, and played almost all of the instruments, except where members of the Exfriends appear: Matt Curreri on some drums, Pete Hamilton on upright bass, and Ray Suen on violin.
Joanie's home is southern California, but she has also lived in Indiana, London, and New York.
