Description
File under Children's Music - Not Condescending. Here comes a different kind of children's record - one that assumes kids are brilliant and passes off dancing and thinking as audience participation. Singer and songwriter Molly Ledford, whose seemingly somber efforts in the indie slo-core band The Verna Cannon brought favorable reviews from Alternative Press and CMJ, shows off her shinier side with Lunch Money.
Sifted from Ledford's own childhood experiences and refined in live shows at public libraries and museums, these ten gems shortly and sweetly take on life with a frank and fond eye.
With a name that honors the spirit of independence you always felt with those precious crumpled dollars in your sock, Lunch Money salutes tricycles, dogs, roller coasters and umbrellas while subtly riffing on the complexities of the new-human condition along the way.
Ledford is joined by Jay Barry (The Verna Cannon) on snare, J.P. Stephens on bass and harmonica, David Hodges on trumpet and trombone and Alison Mann on double bass. The result sounds a bit like Belle and Sebastian meets The Breeders meets Suzanne Vega channeling Shel Silverstein.
Special Note: The cd case folds out and contains all the lyrics.
