Description
Pam Laws grew up in Tallahassee, Florida, where as a child she sang in school and church. In time she discovered her niche in jazz and in 1982 began singing professionally in local clubs. Expanding her reach, she had engagements in the Soviet Union in 1986, and in Europe in '98 and '99. She has been a guest artist with the Greenville Symphony and the Tallahassee Symphony. Ms. Laws has three other recordings: Brand New World ('91), SweetFire ('97), and Let It Shine ('98). For many years she has taught English and Jazz Studies at Tallahassee Community College.
Kevin Bales was Pam's first choice to accompany her, the one who stood above all others in keyboard style and compatibility with her own expression. They have a musical relationship that dates back about 10 years. Bales certainly has the credentials. He was winner of the 1994 American Pianist Association's Jazz Piano Competition and the 1997 International Jazz Pianists Competition. He has played with Wynton Marsalis, Louie Bellson, and Marcus Printup, among other jazz greats, and is featured on the Blue Note CD from Marcus Printup entitled Nocturnal Traces. He now resides in Atlanta, where he dedicates himself full time to music.
Rodney Jordan, bass, has performed and recorded with some of America's finest jazz artists, including Ellis Marsalis, Curtis Fuller, Alvin Fielder, Marcus Printup, Mulgrew Miller, James Williams, Milt Jackson, George Coleman, and Russell Gunn. His recording with Russell Gunn was nominated for a Grammy as Best Contemporary Jazz Recording in 2000. In 2001, Jordan joined the Florida State University faculty, where he currently teaches in the Jazz Studies Department.
Love Songs was recorded in Tallahassee, Florida, during the week of July 19, 2004.
