Recently re-released, the "SOJA EP" is a crucial pick for any lover of roots reggae. This album was recorded at Lion and Fox Studios in the fall of 2000 and is a perfect demonstration of the strong foundation SOJA has in playing conscious powerful music. From that time until now, thousands of copies have been distributed throughout the world. After being "out of stock" for over a year, the "SOJA EP" has been re-issued and is now available to all.
Band Bio:
Soldiers of Jah Army are rising up strong, dedicated on their mission of bringing the message to the people through original roots music. Truly one of a kind, theese gifted songwriters are "...going for verses to move mountains and hillsides, striving for choruses to put the world in the right stride and building bridges to cross over the lies..."( J.H. Freedom Time v.4)
The message of One God, One Aim and One Destiny for all people is the root of the Soldiers' music. To head up S.O.J.A. lead vocalist/guitarist Jacob Hemphill is more than just a singer or entertainer, he brings uplifting lyrical content that's absolutely pure brain food alongside a tight guitar. Ras Bob Jefferson on bass guitar comes with heavy original rhythms, crucial B/U vocals, and a booming stage presence! On keyboards Pat "Ricochet" O'Shea is steady bubbling and dropping hooks that flow like water and crash like lighting. S.O.J.A. drummer Ryan "Jah Byrd" Berty is not just a snare and a hard kick, instead playing on an intricate level not seen in reggae music, bringing new emotion, character and dynamics to the music. To complete the Soldiers sound, percussionist and Nyahbinghi drummer Ken "Iyah" Brownell adds a great mixture of percussions you have to see and hear live to appreciate.
In the winter of 1997/98 they laid down their first recording entitled Creeping In. The self-produced 13 track album was independently released on cassette and received notice in the local reggae scene and Rastafari community. This was the beginning, a great early learning experience for S.O.J.A.
Collaborating on their second work in the Fall of 2000 with legendary engineer Jim Fox at LION and FOX Recording Studios, was the begining of something very special. What was conceived to be a demo CD transformed into a classic 8 track LP (4 songs, 4 dubs, 45min.). More than 4,000+ CD's of the self-titled(SOJA EP) album have been independently distributed in America and have reached internationally to Ethiopia, Jamaica, England, Japan, Holland, Costa Rica, Chile and beyond! It recieved nominations for Album of the Year and Song of the Year ("Nuclear Bomb") at the 2001 D.C. Reggae Awards and has now been nominated for Recording of the Year at the 2002 "Wammies" (Washington Area Music Association) awards show.....................
Between Sept. '01 and April '02, S.O.J.A. was back in the studio with Jim Fox recording their eagerly awaited third album. 15 songs long, "Peace In a Time of War" is an in depth reasoning on the times we live in. The album speaks directly to the people on love, poverty, war, religion, color, mankind, mother earth, judgment, and Jah Rastafari Himself. With lyrical consciousness and musical diversity in full effect, peolple of all walks of life, all colors, classes, different backgrounds, all people can relate to it's universal message. "Peace In a Time of War" official release date was March 15th 2003 but it's music and message are timeless.
Working hard in the DC/Baltimore reggae scene, Soldiers of Jah Army have had the honor to share the stage with many international artists such as Burning Spear, The Wailers, Israel Vibration, Culture, Toots & The Maytals and Gondwana to only name a few. It has been a blessing upon S.O.J.A. so early in their music career, to have the opportunity to play alongside the artists they respect and are inspired by.
Soldiers of Jah Army are a new generation of torch bearers to keep the fire blazing. Out of the belly of the beast in Babylon, a real force is coming up in reggae music and is right on time, to speak to a new audience and reach a place never reached before. Soldiers of Jah Army are rising up today for the children of tomorrow!
