Description
"A friend of mine asked me, "Are you sure you want Special Ed to play? Have you heard them?" Yes, I have. Multiple times. Special Ed and the Shortbus is a stringband that may seem a little hard to swallow for some. Much like the Fugs and Holy Modal Rounders before them, their shows are veritable litmus tests for a crowd's sense of humor. If you've ever answered yes to Frank Zappa's question "Does humor belong in music?" then The Shortbus is for you. They're straight-up nuts when they pick and sing, and if you can get past the lovely freakishness of their stage act, you'll find
some real talent backing up the zaniness."

"Special Ed (takes) on an aimlessly affable demeanor backed up by serious ability on their instruments. From standards such as "Sittin' on Top of the World" to odd covers like Madonna's "Material Girl" these guys show great command of the myriad of styles they attempt to incorporate . . . One gets the feeling that these guys could play anything, and play it with gusto."

Special Ed
and THE Shortbus Bluegrass Band
Special Ed and the Shortbus Bluegrass Band play traditional bluegrass and old-time music. We combine this with jazz, jugband, satirical pop-references and wild antics, creating a spectacle to behold. We are eight members strong, and many times visited by an extended Shortbus family.
Hailing from Richmond, VA, the Shortbus contains former members of the Celtibillies, the Furnace Mountain Band, the Flying Cows of Ventry and other Virginia acts. While young in the world of bluegrass, some of the members have already begun to prove themselves, winning competitions at festivals throughout Virginia. Performances contain a wide variety of music with bizarre skits, carefree onstage banter, and constant audience interaction. Influences range from the bluegrass of Flatt and Scruggs, Bill Monroe, and David Grisman, to Frank Zappa, Prince and Ween. A Shortbus show is as much fun to experience as it is to hear.
Because of the variety of our musical styles, we have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with a wide range of bands, including Virginia bluegrass heroes Nothin' Fancy, NYC's afrobeat ensemble Antibalas, the Frank Zappa super-tribute band Project Object, Richmond's own Devil's Workshop Brass Band, jamgrassers Railroad Earth, and a whole host of various bluegrass, reggae, punk, and rock bands. Up to now we have been exploring the immediate region of the mid-Atlantic and Southeast near to our hometown (all parts of VA, MD, NC, and WV), but will soon be ramping up to invade vast portions of North America and beyond.
In March of 2004 we released our first two albums - Special Ed and the Shortbus Bluegrass Band and Downhill from Here. Given the wide variety in both our music and our crowd types (from drunken bar to family festival), we decided it was best to put out one "clean" and one "dirty" album. Hence, Special Ed . . . is an album comprised of our more straight-ahead songs and tunes and Downhill from Here ventures more into the Shortbus's R-Rated and freaked-out material. Both albums together give a complete picture of the band.
Whatever the type of music, our main goal is to stretch it and bend it into our own brand of Americana. With a combined list of over two hundred traditional songs and tunes, covers and original material, there's always something for everyone at a Shortbus show. Come git you some today!
