Description
De-t-riot is a four piece ass kicking band from the motor city Detroit Michigan. After rockin this town for years as a cover band playing everything from motown to alternative rock we decided hey, its time to write and record a record. Sounds easy enough, but a lot harder than it seems. After about a year of hard work, shopping for recording equipment, building a recording studio, writing 20 songs, learning how to use the recording equipment, recording all the tracks, mixing, mastering, redoing, redoing again, drinking a lot of beer, its done. We decided to record the record ourselves so we wouldn't be rushed paying by the hour in a local studio. The end result was great (listen to the CD) and we still have a recording studio at our disposal to create new music whenever we want.
We used:
A mackie 24 channel mixing council
An Adat 8 track recorder
A peavey classic 50 Tube head with a vintage Marshall 4x12 cabinet
Heartke Bass head
A 1963 Gibson SG guitar with EMG 81 pickups
A newer style Ibanez Bass guitar
GHS strings
Tama Drums
The biggest drum sticks we could find
Sure sm 57 mics for instruments
Sure sm 58 Vocal mics
Alesis midiverb II set on number 4 for reverb fx (on vocals)
And a Alesis quadraverb for stereo fx (vocals and lead solos)
A Sony mini disc recorder to bounce tracks from the adat and to store copies of final mix downs.
If you have done some recording yourself your wondering how did we get such a good recording with only 8 tracks?
We started by recording the drums first as one of the guitarist played along in the drummers head set only, filling all 8 tracks on the adat with drums. Next we mixed down the drum track to the Sony mini disc recorder in stereo by panning toms and symbols as needed to get a little stereo effect on the drums. OK now we have an awesome stereo drum track on a mini disc. With a fresh tape in the adat we sent the drum track back onto channels 1 and 2 of the 8 track leaving us 6 tracks to record the rest of the song. Time for some guitar Tracks. We recorded two rhythm tracks using track 3 for the left side and track 4 as the right, fully panned at mixdown, this made for a solid thick stereo guitar rhythm track. OK 4 tracks left. Track 5 Bass guitar. Track 6 lead guitar solos, guitar fills and back up vocals. Track 7 lead vocals. Track 8 whatever.
Guitars: Ken Filloon and Brian Adkins
Drums: Darrin Filloon
Vocals: Jason Dermos
