Description
Marie Gray has been performing and writing music for guitar since she picked the instrument up at the age of twelve in her hometown of Kearny, New Jersey. She picked it up one day, began playing, and hasn't put it down yet.
Entertaining for over 25 years, she possesses an elaborate repertoire of cover songs consisting of the works of Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow, Janis Joplin, Alanis Morissette, Joan Osborne, Emmylou Harris, The Indigo Girls, Tracy Chapman, AC/DC, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, CSNY, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and many, many more.
Additionally, Marie has been professionally performing her original music in the clubs in New York City's Greenwich Village area: more specifically on "Bleecker Street," at such well known clubs as "The Bitter End," "Kenny's Castaways," and uptown at "Rosie O'Grady's." Notable performances include a groundbreaking inclusive showcase of her original music featured at the Nashville New Music Conference in October, 2001, as one of two performers selected nationally, while touring with "The BOOTLICKERS." Marie performed as the opening act for "THE DRIFTERS" at a benefit to promote teen suicide awareness, sponsored by the AFSP on Sept. 19, 2003, in her duo "GIRLZWITHISSUES" venue, featuring LIZ PASCAL. Additionally, GIRLZWITHISSUES opened up for KIM CHAR MEREDITH and ROBERT URBAN on in AUGUST, 2003, at NYC's "MEOW MIX." Her performances have been described as "captivating," through the depth of her lyrics and strength exhibited through her unique percussive guitar style, vocal range and abilities.
Collaboratively produced with 2002 OMA nominee, Paul Sinclair (The BootLICKERS; The Badlees)...showcasing his musical versatility aligned with Marie's Vision, as well as the percussive talents of Pat Joe Walsh, Aeglechylde: Daughter of the Sun is Marie's independently released debut CD, consisting of a compilation of 13 songs. This album received HONORABLE MENTION STATUS for 4 SONGS from BILLBOARD MUSIC MAGAZINE'S INTERNATIONAL SONGWRITING CONTEST: THE GHOSTS OF NEW YORK CITY; JOB'S CHILD; THE PROZAC SONG; and WHEN WILL YOU EVER LEARN? Marie was also nominated for the prestigious OUTMUSIC AWARDS (OUTSONG OF THE YEAR; OUTMUSICIAN OF THE YEAR)and PRIDE IN THE ARTS AWARDS (OUTSTANDING FEMALE VOCALIST; CAMP PRIDE SONG)in 2003 in two separate categories. The album is well-balanced with clearly lyrical rock songs, mixed with celtic folk ballads containing hauntingly beautiful(sometimes eerie) lyrics that take you on a journey into the soul of your heart through learning how to love one's self for who they are...like the phoenix rising from the ashes...Aeglechylde: Daughter of the Sun soars to freedom and to life.
Marie has also been interviewed by "Girlfriend's" magazine and was the scheduled focal point in their "Girlfriend of the Month" feature article, in February, 2002. THE RISING, a Women's Music Magazine, compared Gray's writing to that of Kris Kristofferson (see review http://www.therising.com). The album and artist received a five star review from DAKOTA SMITH of VOICES Magazine as well. Other performances include Penn State's(Wilkes-Barre) Hayfield Summer Music Festival, Lehman, Pa, on Sunday, August 25th, 2002, as well as return performances at Penn State in May, 2003 unplugged with special guest, LIZ PASCAL of "GIRLZWITHISSUES." Liz and Marie formed the duo "GIRLZ WITHISSUES" this past winter and have successfully collaborated on some new material. All performances feature a special CD signing and open interview and discussion format with Marie Gray.
Her music makes its mark for women musicians and composers through its intensity and association to survivorship by raising issues of consciousness and delves down to the depths of her own soul and pain... to a cathartic orientation of healing that reaches those who listen and have followed her artistic growth through the years.
Marie Gray continues to perform live, sharing her music and words with a steadily growing audience consisting of dedicated lovers of her lyrical content and style.
