Description
Rachel Potter was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her family moved to Seminole, Florida when she was just a baby. She began singing solos at churches when she was only three years old. Her father traveled a lot but played bass and lead guitar whenever he was home. Her mother, Tonya Potter, was a well-known Evangelist who sang and ministered in churches all over the south as well as the Christian Television Network. Rachel traveled with her and performed whenever anyone would listen.
Rachel was obviously musically gifted....but it was more than that with her. Rachel had been touched with an uncanny ability and confidence that usually only comes with years of experience. She was born beautiful and talented. She succeeded at everything she tried. She wrote her first song when she was around 7, when her mother had just been diagnosed with severe diabetes and was entering the hospital. Rachel thought her mother was going to die and so she wrote a song for her and sang it to her when she returned home. It was so good that the pastor at Calvary Baptist Church wrote music for it and had it recorded. No one could believe that a little child like Rachel could be so wise beyond her years. They called her the little girl with the great big voice.
But the beauty and the talent seemed like a burden to Rachel. Everything came too easy. She knew no strangers and was only happy when she was singing. She felt empty and knew something was missing. Then in 10th grade she went to summer Bible camp. She was having major personal problems but all of a sudden......she felt God's love. She asked Jesus to come into her heart and was saved. She knew then what God had known all along. It was then that she understood what God had planned for her. He wanted her to use this incredible talent for His work. She wrote a song called "Pretending", which talks about finally getting real with God, and surrendering to His plan.
Rachel graduated with honors from Seminole High School. She competed for the coveted 2002 "Miss Seminole" pageant and won 2nd place. An excellent student, she was a featured soloist for the Seminole Singers and was chosen "Miss War Hawk" her senior year. She loves to listen to Nichole Nordeman, Whitney Houston, Rachel Lampa and Mariah Carey.
In 2001 Rachel was discovered and signed by a small Christian label in Florida. She wrote all of her own songs and impressed everyone who heard them. Her producer decided to send her to Estes Park in Denver, Colorado for the Gospel Music Association's 28th Annual "Seminar in the Rockies". He felt it would be a good experience for her ..... but she went and won 2nd place out of 520 artists from all over the world! She is considered "Best of the Best" after becoming 2nd place Division winner in the "Spotlight 2002- Contemporary Christian Vocal Competition". This was her chance to compete for the highest award presented by GMA'S Academy of Gospel Music Arts. Talented artists from around the world are encouraged throughout the industry to attend the seminars and compete for the awards. Nationally known recording artists, such as Rebecca St. James and Third Day, are just a few of the previous winners of this event.
Rachel's CD "COME BACK HOME" debuted in December 2002 and she opened for Jaci Velasquez and Sonic Flood on December 6th at Coachman Park in Clearwater, Florida. A crowd of 15,000 was there and Rachel wowed them! Her CD is currently being carried at Berean's Christian stores as well as the label's website. www.narrowdoorrecords.com. We pray God will keep his hand on Rachel and will allow her to reach many teenagers with her deep love for the Lord and His music.
