Description
Her voice is rich and sensual. Her songs are recipes: one part acoustic pop, one part funk, one part jazz. Allyssa Jones has "multiple-musicality" syndrome. She just can't live in one style aisle- and it's a good thing! In her CD, Daughter's Dance, there are traces of her family's eclectic record collection. Carole King, The Temptations, James Taylor and Earth, Wind & Fire were her earliest musical mentors. Add classical piano lessons from age 5 and later fascination with Prince and Dianne Reeves, and it becomes clear why she insists on singing several different styles at once.
Allyssa's childhood training in piano and voice took her to New York, where she earned a degree in music education from Adelphi University. After a period of teaching and freelancing around Philadelphia, she moved to Chicago, where she fronted two popular bands, Flashlight and Concord, and appeared as a guest vocalist with the funk band Zoogenic. Her jazz dates featured sought-after players such as Steve Million, Neal Alger and Tim Davis, and Jim Cox. In 2000, Bradley Parker Sparrow, an early supporter, invited her to appear in Southport Records' annual "Women of Southport Jazz Festival."
Named one of Boston Magazine's "40 Bostonians to Watch" in 2002, Allyssa has appeared as a guest with several area bands. Daughter's Dance features guitarists Mike Welch and Mike Williams, bassist Greg Holt, drummer Jon Hazilla, and pianist Emily DeGraff. The title track features guest guitarist Brian Amador of Sol y Canto.
