Description
I started taking music lessons at the early age of 5 years old, I played piano, guitar and drums in elementary school, eventually taking up the Saxophone and Trumpet through high school. While in high school I made a big switch to the Trombone, I played my Trombone with Ozanam Strings Orchestra throughout high school. After graduation I attended Indiana University for composition, after one year I moved to Ohio to sing and play with the R&B group called The Gibson Brothers. The Gibson Brothers had two major hits and, toured the United States and Canada. After Canada I went to Buffalo, NY, and got a chance to do some backup horns with Rick James in the studio. Then came the Group called Chaz, an R&B group from Pittsburgh. I recorded an album with that group. The next few years I formed my own Jazz group, which toured with organist Richard Groove Holmes and did several concerts in New York, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and, Boston for Jazz Festival. I also played with the R&B group called House of Soul. During that time I went back to New York to record my own Jazz Solo Project called C-Train which was released this year on Turrbbo Records. I made guest appearances with Maynard Ferguson and Stanley Turrentine and was featured soloist with the world famous Cotton Club Band of New York. I also recorded a CD with Floyd King called Sincerely, which is also on Turrbbo Records. Recently I performed at Mellon Jazz Festival in Pittsburgh, following a presentation by the University of Pittsburgh Jazz Seminar Think Tank. With my debut CD, C-Train I hope to establish myself as leader. The disc includes several original compositions that reveal my wide- ranging vision, from the stop-start structure of Unfinished Business and frenzied solos of Antoine's Dance Song to a fresh, full-toned reading of My Funny Valentine. I tried to play in a different style on each song and then try to connect everything like it's a story. Although I currently live in Pittsburgh, my band is based out of New York. It includes my brother Floyd King on alto sax and internationally known drummer Idris Muhammad. C-Train leans towards traditional jazz with a few solos that push the melodic envelope, but I do not want to limit myself to one style of music. There are about three or four different things I want to dive into, I want to do a classical album, and a smooth jazz album and a gospel album. You can also check out my upcoming performances and sample some of the songs on my new CD C-Train on my website at www.carlkingmusic.com.
