Description
A gutsy independent project combining Smokey Mountain soul and Delta stomp, this Asheville, NC-based troupe proves time and again it has a solid grasp on American roots music (as well as good storytelling), almost evoking scenes from dimly-lit juke joints from a time long gone. Blackley's original songs contain themes that run the gamut from grief and love to murder and heartache (with an occasional train song thrown in).
Blackley (singer, songwriter, guitar player) was born in the tiny fishing hamlet of Warsaw, VA, near the Chesapeake Bay. She began writing stories at age 5 or 6, as best she can remember. At the age of 19, she began playing guitar and singing, with no formal music training. She began putting her tall tales and stories to music soon after.
"When A Woman..." is the second recording from Laura Blackley, released in 2002.
