Description
croup: (kroop) n. A pathological condition of the larynx, especially in infants and children, that is characterized by respiratory difficulty and a hoarse, brassy cough.
From dialectal croup, to croak.
Middle English croupe, from Old French, of Germanic origin.
The Croup is a recording project based on the collaboration between Jason Gambrell and Casey Brandt. Both Brooklyn residents, the two met off and on for the better part of a year to develop and record new ideas that ultimately resulted in the full length album, The Croup. The songs grew out of each musician's bluegrass influences as well as their more progressive and eclectic tastes. The production and arrangements are also greatly informed by their modest studio set-up; all the tracks were recorded on Brandt's P.C.
Gambrell, originally from South Carolina, played drums in the southern punk projects Jackleg and Premonition before relocating to Brooklyn in 1998. Once moving to New York, he hooked up with guitarist Chris Carter to form the punk metal duo Flat Black.
Brandt moved to New York from Baltimore in 1998. He played in the folk punk outfit The Beer from 2000 - 2002 and has recorded over a dozen solo albums under the moniker Furious Billy. He currently plays in the three piece rock group Satirius Johnson.
