Description
Blood & Flame is best described as a collection of (mostly) "history" songs.
The subjects dealt with range from historical characters such as William Wallace (Wallace), Robert Burns (Excise Man), Caravaggio (Caravaggio's Eyes) and, of course, the ubiquitous recruiting sergeant (Into Paris With Me), to places (London Town and Dunkeld) and the title song about the battle of Bothwell Bridge (Blood & Flame). There is also a song about the passing of the glory days of the Clydesdale Horse (Last Of Your Line), a song about the passing of the glory days of the old gods (Gods), an acoustic version of an old favourite (Mellow Song), a traditional song (Jock o' Hazeldean) and a nice wee mood song to finish (Alright With Me).
All the songs are self penned (except Jock o' Hazeldean) and are performed in Dave's inimitable style; a style that ranges lyrically and musically from the simple, but effective, Caravaggio's Eyes through the jazzier sounding Mellow Song to the straight forward storytelling of Into Paris With Me.
