Description
McCabe puts on the fingerpicks for much of this offering, and takes us down the street for a look at bums, bars, rude waiters and hard-working heroes. There's even a visit to church, and a cemetery. These are done with Chuck's trademark wit and good humor, but there's no mistake he's talking about life and death here, and a few of the songs achieve a poignancy unknown in his previous work; witness one of the songs, 'Minimum Wager' which won the Woody Guthrie competition in 2001.
Long-time folk fans will recognize the distinctive vocals of Maria Muldaur singing with McCabe on three cuts, as well as Meridian Green, Gene Parsons of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Bro's and Seattle's veteran bluesgal, Alice Stuart.
Instrumental chores are shared by Myron Dove on bass, (now touring with Santana) Czech mandolin wiz Radim Zenkl, and Pete Grant who toured with Hoyt Axton for many years, plays dobro and slide guitars. Freebo, from Bonnie Raitt's band adds tuba to the title track, and Bobby Black, formerly with Asleep at the Wheel, helps finish the album with some stunning Hawaiian steel (double neck, no pedals!).
