Description
"Every now and then a musician manages to climb over my high wall of standards long enough to make me want to hear more only after twisting my head sideways like a hound dog a couple of times before I realize what's hit me. Denise Dill got me up off my feet at the 30th National Women's Music Festival and my feet were tired!" (~Kara Barnard)
Denise Dill has been a performing musician since the age of eight, but her interest in guitar came somewhat later. At fifteen, she took up the guitar to impress a crush, but it soon became something so much more. Her songwriting quickly evolved and took over her other musical interests which led her to attend Berklee College of Music where she studied piano and majored in songwriting. While Boston certainly left its mark on the young folksinger, her heart eventually called her back home to Indiana where she continued to perform locally with her band Orenda. After one year of successful touring which gained her a very enthusiastic and loyal following, Orenda parted ways and Denise changed directions.
In 2003, she moved to Bloomington, Indiana to attend Indiana University and her academic pursuits have provided much inspiration for her songwriting. Both profoundly personal as well as political, Denise's songs draw the listener in deep and hold on.
Denise's third and most accomplished solo album was released in August 2004. The eighteen songs encompassed on this self-titled CD are the culmination of two years of hard work and experience. Growing up in a trailer community in rural southern Indiana provided a deep connection with her community and the surrounding landscape. The inspiration born of that relationship resounds through her lyrics and the singular richness of her guitar playing. The album resonates intensely with themes of nature, love, and loss. It is at once heartwarming and heartbreaking. The album features spoken work artist Jada B. and was recorded by sound engineer and jazz bassist, Jason Ellis.
Denise spent the summer of 2004 promoting her album on tour with Irina Rivkin (Outmusic Song of the Year 2003) and Lisa Sanders (two-time San Diego Acoustic Artist of the year). She has shared the stage with Pamela Means, Alix Olson, and Ember Swift. Still a newcomer to the scene, Denise has already performed at the National Women's Music Festival where she received much praise and encouragement from the likes of Wishing Chair, Kym Tuvim, and Kara Barnard.
"Denise Dill is the most original, brilliant, singer/songwriter I've come across in a long time. You have to check this woman out!" (~Lisa Sanders, singer/songwriter and two-time San Diego Music Awards winner)
