Description
It was 1998 when Motown songwriting legend, Barrett Strong ("I Heard it Through the Grapevine," "War") strolled into a Detroit area health food store and heard a powerful, soulful voice coming from the back of the store. The talented culprit was singer/songwriter Eliza (pronounced Ah-leeza) belting it out for the sheer joy of it. Impressed, Strong signed the young chanteuse to his independent label Blarritt Records. Before long, the two were collaborating. The result was Eliza's spirited debut CD "I Want More" featuring sultry R&B vocals coupled with urban, dance and hip hop rhythms.
Inspired by their creative union, Eliza quickly released a follow up disc "I'm Waiting" - a captivating collection of radio-friendly, sophisticated pop-funk that draws equally from Motown and Detroit's rock city roots. Cuts from the disc were spotlighted on a slew of Midwest commercial radio stations including The River (94.3 FM), The Planet (96.3), 89x (89.5 FM) and WDET (101.9 FM). Since its release "I'm Waiting" has sold over 4,000 copies and netted Eliza a stack of glowing press, leading to guest appearances on Fox 2 News, PBS' "Backstage Pass" and the "Jenny Jones Show."
Watching Eliza perform live is an exhilarating experience. A dynamic front woman, as well as a gifted keyboardist, Eliza's unforgettable shows have warranted her reputation as a top notch live performer and earned her headlining slots at preimere venues and festivals across the nation. Whether she is backed by a high energy, world-beat tinged band, or is performing with a stripped down acoustic combo, Eliza's shows never fail to touch the heart. Says Eliza "It's an electricity. There's a vibe you can feel in the crowd. Singing is like being naked; you're totally vulnerable. But I know if I have faith and put everything into my music, they're going to like me."
And that they do. In March 2001 audiences in Austin, Texas were treated to Eliza's luminous live show when she performed at a packed showcase at the prestigious SXSW Music Festival. In April, Eliza was nominated for "Outstanding Pop Artist" and "Outstanding Songwriter" at the Detroit Music Awards.
Currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on her third CD, Eliza has written and recorded an amazing catalog of songs that evokes the best of Nikka Costa, Nelly Furtado, Alicia Keys, Macy Gray and Destiny's Child, while still remaining wholly her own. With a voice that touches the soul, and songs bursting with catchy hooks - Eliza is Motown's new rising star.
