Description
The Guymon Ensley Quintet (GEQ) is a Jazz Ensemble comprised of a smokin’ three-piece rhythm section and two well orchestrated horns. Each of the members is an accomplished musician, and collectively posses nearly two hundred years of experience. GEQ brings to the table, musicianship, experience and professionalism.
GEQ’s recent release, “Here . . . Put This On,” is an example of the band’s “right in the chops” approach to presentation. It contains three swingin original compositions alone with hard-hitting arrangements of tunes composed and performed by such legends, as Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. Brett Fischbach, Editor of the Lake County Star, writes, “GEQ specializes in the Jazz classics, be-bop, and post-bop. They have a dynamic style and lots of energy. If you’ll looking for something soft and mellow, you’ll have to look elsewhere.”
Many of the selections from the CD were heard at the 2003 Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival. Additionally, cuts from the release were enjoyed at the 2003 Ypsilanti Heritage and Idlewild Jazz Festival performances. “GEQ has that secret something of great Jazz ensembles. They play music of the highest artistic quality and never compromise artistic integrity, yet they entertain the listeners in the finest sense of the word.”- Linda Yohn, Music Director WEMU, Ypsilanti, MI.

GUYMON ENSLEY
(Bandleader)
Although a newcomer to the Jazz scene, Guymon Ensley has performed and recorded R&B and Blues for the last thirty years. He has toured with such internationally known artists as The Temptations and The Contours. Formally trained as a Classical musician at two Michigan Universities, he has experience performing in an orchestral setting, as well as smaller wind and brass ensembles. However, Guy's love for Jazz has led to the formation of his group, GEQ, the (Guymon Ensley Quintet).
In a search for key members of the band, Guy recruited bassest, Kerry Lacy. A native of Ohio, Kerry began his music career playing gospel in his hometown church. Extensive study with numerous nationaly known bassist, helped him find his nitch in jazz. Kerry is a indespensible member of GEQ.
veteran saxophonist Cornelius "Ju-Ju" Johnson to share the all-important front line with him. A native Detroiter, whose background in entertainment is not limited to his musical talents, Ju-Ju possesses notable experience in the television and motion picture industry as well. He has appeared in popular productions such as Thirty Something and Harlem Nights, starring Eddie Murphy. His experience in musical performance is extensive, including performances with such artists as Diahann Carroll, The Isley Brothers, Lou Rawls and Isaac Hayes to name a few.
Bassist, Kerry Lacy was Guy's choice to head the band's rhythm section. Kerry's extensive background as a Gospel bassist is just what was needed to build the right formula. A former student of Jazz bassists Dan Pliskow, Don Mayberry and Rodney Whitaker to name a few, gave him the skills necessary to subsequently perform with such greats as Sam Sanders, Mikhal Caldwell and Eileen Orr. Kerry also led the musical group, Cruise Control who over the years shared the same bill with internationally know artist like The O'Jays, The Temptations and Kool and the Gang.
Guy rounded out the rhythm section with Phil Lesky on keyboards and Milton Hale on drums, both of whom bare many credits to their careers. Phil and Milton, along with Kerry Lacy, blend to form that unique "GEQ style". With the compliments of the solid unison horn lines of Guy and Ju-Ju, this band is "SMOKIN"!
