Description
Music can sometimes fixate on either pain or easy answers but The Smell of Rain by Katy Wehr explores the space between those two extremes, giving voice to genuine struggle and exploring the rocky path toward resolution.
With strong, clear vocals and an Americana sound that leans now toward folk, now toward alt-country, Katy Wehr uses sparse lyrics and natural imagery to tell stories about loneliness, fear, forgiveness and the stirrings of hope.
Growing up along the Minnehaha Creek near Minneapolis, Katy Wehr was fascinated by the natural world and tried to express it in music and poetry. She was always breaking the no-singing-at-the-dinner-table rule and her favorite moments were spent singing along to the player piano that had belonged to her great-grandparents.
Starting in 2001, Katy played in a band called Porch Light that was known for its thoughtful lyrics and blend of contemporary and traditional sound, particularly thanks to Katy's pure and expressive vocals. Porch Light released two self-produced albums, with Katy writing about half their songs, and they played all over the Land of 10,000 Lakes from coffee shops to the Minnesota State Fair.
In 2003, Katy headed west over the Rockies to Vancouver, BC to start a Masters degree. The ocean, mountains and distance from home gave her fresh inspiration and she started working with Vancouver-based producer Spencer Capier on a solo project. Katy's writing focused on themes of struggle and resolution and these new songs became the album The Smell of Rain that was released on March 31, 2005.
In June Katy Wehr will be moving back to Minnesota.
