Description
KOHALA's gentle jazz arrangements for acoustic and classical guitars reflect the exotic pristine beauty of the region on the Big Island where the 3 members live. Lead guitarist Charles Michael Brotman met guitarists Charlie Recaido and Kevin Teves when he moved from Honolulu to the Big Island in the early '90s. Kevin and Charlie both grew up in Hawaii playing island music with a finger picking style on steel-string acoustic guitars.
Charles is a classical guitarist who began playing contemporary jazz after completing graduate studies in classical music. The combination of their diverse musical influences has created a truly unique sound that crosses over between the genres of Jazz, Contemporary Hawaiian, and New Age. KOHALA's fans include people of all ages who appreciate the beauty of acoustic instruments and great guitar playing.
Since the group's first performance 4 years ago, they have performed throughout Hawaii and Japan. KOHALA has given numerous live radio performances and interviews on Japan's largest radio stations, and has been featured in dozens of articles in Japanese fan magazines. Their most recent release, "Back To Kohala", is their fifth CD released in the U.S. and Japan.
Originally from Mercer Island, Washington, Charles Michael Brotman received BA and MA degrees in music. After teaching classical guitar at the University of Hawaii Music Department for 9 years, Brotman released his first 2 CDs: MANGO COOLER (Global Pacific 1990) and PACIFIC RENDEZVOUS (Brainchild 1993). Both charted in the top 10 on US contemporary jazz radio. Brotman now works out of his Lava Tracks Recording Studio in the beautiful Kohala region on the Big Island and spends his time as a composer and producer when he is not performing with KOHALA. His compositions are heard worldwide on radio, film, and television.
Recaido, born and raised in Hawaii, performed and recorded with the group 'Summer,' which toured the US and Japan in the late 70s with Hawaii's best known band, 'Kalapana.' Recaido now lives in Waimea, in the Kohala region of the Big Island, and works as an independent engineer and producer when he is not touring or recording with KOHALA. Teves grew up on Oahu, and like Recaido, has been an active member of Hawaii's musical community since his teenage years. Recaido, Teves and many of their former band-mates were at the forefront of the 'Hawaiian Renaissance,' in which traditional island music merged with contemporary styles to form the current contemporary island sound.
