Highway Dave and the Varmints - The Lowdown on the Hoedown
Steve Earle, Byrds, Johnny Cash - mix 'em all up with Worcestershire sauce and you'll have some idea of what Highway Dave and The Varmints are about.
From the wild Black Country of the English Midlands, the band creates a driven alt.country sound with acoustic and electric elements. Highway Dave's songs cover the themes of long-time-love, long-lost-love, long-lust-love and naturally the odd crisis of faith. These are supplemented by lead guitarist Mick South's rootsy songs of the world of change, mostly small change.
The boys take from the roots of bluegrass and the twang of Nashville, with the odd thrashville thrown in for good measure. Upbeat line dancin', Knopfler pastichin', good ole preachin' Varmint humour is never too far away.
Distinctive two part harmony vocals are crafted with a doff to the Stanley, Everly and Marx brothers. Drums'n'bass are spiced with authentic African djembe beats, as Ralph Stanley meets Livingstone? Dave's rhythm mandolin and telecaster and Mick's fingerpickin' acoustic and electric round off the sounds.
You can run from this band but you'll only get tired.
