Description
Yakshi presents a compelling and otherwordly sound for sacred events and deep listening. With Lisa Sangita Moskow on the electric and acoustic sarod and Mihai Manoliu on classical and steel-string guitars, Yakshi creates an exquisite confluence of East / West lyricism, inspiration and originality.
The group moves through quiet textural pieces, intense improvisations and polyrhythmic compositions with equal fluency. Sangita's formal background includes a 15 year stint with sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan along with forays into gamelan orchestra, new music and European improv as well as interests in African, Japanese, and Chinese musical forms.
New Music inspires Mihai's work as a multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer, and teacher. After graduating from MIT in 1984, he continued his musical journey by exploring instruments from diverse cultures: guitars-6/12-string, nylon, electric; fretless bass, sitar, hand percussion and his latest passions (kora, sarod, and oud). Mihai teaches music in the San Francisco Bay Area.
