Review from Northwest Current: (Washington DC)
Middle C Music has put its own jazz CD, filled with tunes by local musicians who teach at the Tenleytown music store.
"Last summer I realized that I had some of the best jazz players in Washington, DC, teaching in my store," said owner Myrna Sislen. "I suggested to them that maybe we should put on a concert and they suggested doing a CD. It is something of a stretch for a sheet music store to produce an album, but I thought it would be a great idea."
The result is Middle C Music Jazz All Stars.
A Sunday afternoon concert marked the official release. The musicians - Peter Fraize on tenor saxophone, Fred Yonnet on jazz harmonica, Jim Levy on piano, Michael Bowie on acoustic bass, Warren Howe on drumset, and Alejandro Lucini on percussion - performed and then signed CDs.
Sislen describes the albums opening song, "Blues on Middle C," as a "brisk take on the 12-bar form" and "a tune which twists the basic conventions with an almost Monk-like flavor."
