"Michael has made a very fine debut disc showcasing his tasty guitar, intriguing songs and whimsical, always entertaining vocals. He's even better in concert. I think we'll be hearing great things from him for a long time to come." John Sinclair ( writer, musician, political prisoner, former assistant editor of Blues Access Magazine, radio personality WWOZ radio New Orleans)
With the release of his selftitled debut disc, Michael Juan Nunez was introduced to a national audience. As leader of the band 'The RiverBabys' Michael learned the ins and outs of being a frontman for a band. The RiverBabys' following; although very rabid, did not go much past the Lafayette, Louisiana parish line. The band did make it to Memphis in 2003 for the International Blue Challenge and ended up in the top 5 out of nearly 100 bands from around the world. This, from a little 3 piece band playing original compositions, up against 6, 7, 8 piece groups with much more experience. Many said they lost only because, the band was disqualified for going over their time limit. They did however receive rave reviews, and even caught the eye of Alligator Records president, Bruce Iglauer. Although admittedly a bit to rock-n-roll he commented that Michael had "an impressive slide guitar style."
Michael's new album however, was stripped to the bones acoustic blues, and folk rock. This record would go on to get him the 2002 'best emerging blues artist' award from OffBeat Magazine, as well as shows outside of the area including The Harvest Jazz and Blues festival in Fredericton, New Brunswick and playing on bills, or toe to toe, with the likes of Sonny Landreth, Corey Harris, Tab Benoit, The North Mississippi Allstars, Eric Johnson, and many others.
It was about that time when he also became a member of Roddie Romero's band The Hub City Allstars, and also famed South Louisiana singer/ songwriter Zachary Richard's band. These two bands, as well as his acoustic act have allowed Michael to play for audiences, literally around the world. Michael is also working with former Clifton Chenier guitarist/ legend Harry Hypolite, and appeared at Jazzfest in 2004 as guitarist for Mr. Henry Gray (formerly of the Howling Wolf Band, and chess records session pianist.)
Although he says he is having the time of his life, all this work put the breaks on his solo project. Well, ...May 17th, 2005 will see the release of a new album. Entitled 'About To Snap' it is quite a bit different from the debut, and quite powerful. Although there are a few acoustic numbers running through the disc, it is defiantly an electric album. Blues, rock-n-roll, folk, R-n-B, all wrapped up in a swamp soaked package, that is sure to turn a few heads.
While not a house hold name, it is definitely worth the time to check out this passionate performer. It's sure to get crowds dancing and bobbing their heads to the self described 'BAYOUFUNKBLUESROCKSTUFF' that bleeds off the stage!!!
