Description
Intense. Passionate. Intelligent. Poetic. These are a few words that describe the genre-busting folk music of Namoli Brennet. A self-made artist who has released 3.5 independent albums in just under 2 years, Brennet is as hard working as she is prolific. Her music has been described as "A divine marriage of emotion and intellect", and her 3rd release, "The Brighter Side of Me" (2004), shows a gifted lyricist and songwriter whose music continues to defy easy categorization.
As an openly transgendered artist, Brennet has never shied away from the question of gender (see 2002's Boy in a Dress) - but neither has she become singularly obsessed with it. Drawing from a rather complex palette of experience, Brennet deftly wields slant rhyme, alliteration and onomatopoeia to create rich and deep imagery. Coupled with her achingly powerful voice, it's a provocative and deeply moving combination. Brennet effortlessly references everything from Parisian bossa nova to gutsy, percussive folk, somehow managing to choose substance over style every time.
Let us also say this: Namoli Brennet is not afraid to drive. It's no secret that she takes the term "unlimited mileage" very seriously when renting a car. As a touring artist, she's travelled to LA, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit, DC, New York, Boston and Toronto. And that's the short list. She's as comfortable performing in front of a crowd of 10,000 as she is doing a house concert for 20. Her sophisticated and passionate presence has consistently wowed fans at Festivals, coffee shops and acoustic clubs all over the country.
Still not convinced? Try these: Refreshingly talented, with no bitter aftertaste. Lyrically sweet, with floral overtones and a pleasant finish. Pervasive and flavorful, but never cloying. Try some Namoli Brennet today. You'll be glad you did.
"Brennet plays and sings with an intensity and intelligence that can't be ignored."
