"Never Let Me Go" is nothing if not compelling, with some of the greatest composers in jazz, including Clifford Brown, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Johnny Mercer and Jerome Kern. It includes an exceptional group of musicians, showcasing the piano chops of San Francisco's late and great Al Plank as well as Vermont's own Bruce Sklar. Sacramento's virtuoso guitarist, Steve Homan, is a great support for Nicols' voice and reveals his wizardry in a multitude of ways. Also from Sacramento is the charismatic drummer, Jimmy Robinson. Rounding out the talented crew are acoustic bassists, Scott Steed of Portland, Oregon and Clyde Stats from Vermont.
Like the artist herself, this debut CD is full of promise and surprise. Nicols has produced a first class album for a brand new Vermont Label, Polkadot Records. Some selections are live with a sextet and others are studio sessions as a trio or duo. "Never Let Me Go" saturates the senses and is a soothing remedy for what ails you.
Nicols began training as a classical pianist at the age of seven. In spite of her enormous talent, she was very shy about her abilities. However, many years of travel and "wood-shedding" would eventually change all that and she gradually gained the confidence needed to begin achieving her musical goals. She unknowingly began taking what was perceived by others as bold steps. To her, it was just doing what came naturally...improvising.
At the age of nineteen Nicols spent her junior year of college in Florence, Italy. Although there to study art, she was lucky enough to have been mentored by the master pianist and teacher, Vanda Scaravelli. Two years later she moved to Tokyo, immersing herself into the art, music and traditional culture of Japan's rich heritage.
Brimming with inspiration, she returned to America and settled in New Orleans, Louisiana, birthplace of jazz and not far from her home state of Mississippi, land of the blues. Here, Adele began studying with Columbia Recording Artist, Ellis Marsalis, and soon got her first regular piano gig at the French Quarter's famous Fairmont Hotel.
In New Orleans she married and gave birth to two children. Her passion for being a mother fueled her burgeoning
music career, and Nicols made a surprising shift of focus from playing piano to singing jazz. Although she would
later return to the piano, her new reputation as a jazz singer was quickly noticed and a fan base began to grow.
Another change was soon to happen as Nicols' marriage took her on the road again, this time to northern California. There she studied with the legendary jazz vocalist, Mark Murphy and was known as a classic jazz singer with a style of her own and fresh interpretations of song.
Giving birth to two more children Adele remained devoted to both motherhood and music. Though her marriage soon ended, she was able to provide for her family by singing at night, spending the days with her children.
After three years of raising children alone, Nicols took moved her family across country one more time and settled in the Green Mountains of Vermont. She has released her debut album, "Never Let Me Go." In Vermont she performs in festivals and select venues throughout New England, but has still concentrates on raising her children, all brimming with musical talent in their own right. As they are getting older she is preparing to launch a national tour and is working on her second album.
