Tear it Down
Peter Stein
You could call this good guitar playing and lots of exposed emotion. Songs that are evocative of vintage acoustic rock...warm...punchy lyrical content, strong rythym section featuring some of Sydneys finest musicians.

Description
PETER STEIN has never fit comfortably into categories. He follows his own musical and spiritual quest, weaving together his musical roots with a wide experience of life, and creating new traditions in blues/roots and pop music.
Stein was born into a family in Perth West Australia and recalls his grandfather bringing him his 1st guitar from overseas. "It was love at first site," he recalls . By the time he had completed high school he was playing guitar and writing songs which incorporated influences of folk, pop, country and blues musicians and people as diverse as Hank Williams, The Beatles, Leadbelly, Nina Simone, The Byrds and Dylan. As a teenager in '66 he was blown away by seeing Bob Dylan playing with an early line up. Little did he know he would meet him personally in 1986. "He's been a big influence in my life - for the better..."
By his early 20's he was playing guitar with a band called Cahoots, where he established some reputation on the local music scene. In a latter incarnation he teamed up with Mark Mcantree - guitarist, and they played backup to the legendary Roy Orbison with a 5 piece band that included the rythym section of Oz band Blackfeather, Bob Fortesque and Al Kash. Mark latter went east and ended up playing guitar for the well known Australian band The Divynyls. Peter's wandering spirit also took him east to Melbourne where he started a long process of recording various styles of music. "I just became obsessed with recording and still have 100's of songs from that period"
His recordings with jazz singer Vince Jones attracted the attention of Warner Chappell music and ATA Sydney. Both offered him publishing deals in the late 70's and Peter moved with his family to Sydney in the early 80's.
His songwriting skills attracted the attention of Bob Dylan's management in 1986 and he met Bob to discuss a song of Peters called 'My People'. "I sort of hoped he would do the song and he just said, 'I'll study it'. I thought those were strange words. Wished I'd bought a camera though..."
Peter kept up the songwriting and he won various awards in the Paters & Rock Eistedfords. His song Heroes and Villains became the hit song from the Sydney musical Rasputin. His songs were also being covered worldwide by people such as Swedens Lotta Engberg who had a hit with his song Together we can Make this wrong world right & Japans Takanori Hiura who recorded peters song Long Distance lover.
Grammy winners, The Blind Boys of Alabama, (who recently toured with Tom Petty & collaborated with Ben Harper on his recent CD) covered a version of Peters song "Nothin without a heart" on their hit album Holdin on.
Through many songs countless live performances, Peter Stein's music has remained fresh and aggressive, with a sense of deepening spirituality, and a consistent intellectual and artistic challenge, to himself and to his audience. His recent CD Tear it Down features his guitar playing and songwriting skills.
"I've gone full circle. I started out in Roots/blues and country and that's what I'm doing now. I'm just bringing a lifetime of experience to it now. I know what I'm talking about now. That's the difference."
