Description
Emerging from the eclectic art scene of Venice Beach, CA, in 2004, when random jam sessions between neighborhood friends began to reveal a unique convergence of varied styles, Quebb recorded their debut album, "The Unknown Show" while touring the country. After months of early morning and midnight practices on the beach, the three-man band had decided to pack up, sell everything, and hit the road in a humble 35' RV to record tracks in locations ranging from garages in the high desert to riversides in national parks. Along the way, the band played in coffee shops and street corners from Seattle to Manhattan. After a series of what they euphemistically called "challenges", including the RV's inevitable explosion in the Deep South, near-death experiences, and abstract poverty, Quebb made it back to Venice to finish production in January, 2005.
Initially built on a collection of songs that John Caelan had developed over many years, the band quickly adapted the lyrically-rich ballads to their distinctive style, combining world rhythms with acoustic instrumentals and abundant three-part harmonies. Anchored to John's acoustic guitar, with arrangements that sought to escape the confines of predictable 4/4 time beats, Mikel Farber brought into the fold organic percussions and world rhythms, while Jourdan D'Andrea closed the deal with a roguish saxophone and classical piano. With all three being experienced vocalists, harmony and counterpoints were a natural element from the beginning. Soon, the band expanded its set with new material borne from their experiences on the road, highlighted by the fervor of national politics that impacted each leg of the journey. Songs such as "We Are Together" and "The Unknown Show" were conceived on the long road, and they serve as telling bookends to Quebb's first anthem, "Dogs and Swine", written when the band first formed. Having no interest in limiting their expression with conventional band hierarchy, it was decided from the onset that Quebb would present music composed and performed by each member, without heed to the traditional "lead" artist idea, thus Mikel's "Deep Sea Diving" and "Listen Lady", as well as Jourdan's frenetic piano arrangement, "The Waltz", became integral parts of the set. As a result, the album flows like a rock musical, each element a progressive snapshot in the members' experiences, culminating in "The Unknown Show", a melodic journal of intense introspect, presented by three voices that merge seamlessly while remaining distinct in emotion and presence.
These are the lyrics to the song, "The Unknown Show". We hope you enjoy our music and thank you for taking a look!
The Unknown Show
Music and Lyrics by John Caelan
I feel thinly veiled,
Like the lie about the check that I had never mailed.
These words, they haunt my head,
Like the ghost of something clever that I once had said.
I chase the perfect lines
Through imaginary fields laden with Land mines,
As my good sense tumbles like the domino-
I think I'm falling prey to the unknown show.
I feel tense as steel-
Like the last frame's missing from the movie reel.
Each run through the same ol' song
Well, it begs the inquisition: Were we right or wrong?
I drown in a pool of sound-
While a flood of hesitation seems to churn around.
Like the loose leaf spinning in the river's flow.
You can't break free of the unknown show.
Let go the bird in hand-
We need every finger in a three-man band.
The road weaves like a fallen thread
On a tapestry, apparently, of blue and red.
All rolled up in a sardine can,
It's a funny allegory of the best laid plan.
Well, a worthy explanation we may never know-
It's the baffling attraction of the unknown show.
Sunrise, Seattle hills,
Sax in the alley under window sills.
Fine folk on a greener grass-
A kind communiqu with everyone we pass.
See through the cunning rues-
It's the cordial final feast before we pay our dues.
It's the effortless audition on the patio.
Just a little taste of the unknown show.
Strife comes, to the say the least,
When the needle on the compass points to
Somewhere east.
Strange towns where the people stare-
You'd think that we were walking in our underwear.
One down in the land of cheese-
It's the end of the beginning that nobody sees.
It's the fighter's humble moment from a sudden blow.
Nine counts down from the unknown show.
Slipped in from the Jersey side.
Dizzy like a kid on a carnival ride.
Rain falls where the rubble lies.
A lingering reminder of our broken skies.
We marched right down to Madison Square.
A worthy demonstration that would lead nowhere.
Well, there's just one thing that I'd like to know:
How do we resume the unknown show?
I flew like a startled bird
To my home where the angels have the final word.
I walked under moonlight on the Venice beach,
I thought, my God, is my sanity on the breach?
Then, I watched my landlord change the front door locks.
As I stood in the corner with a cat in the box.
I really must confess, I almost didn't go-
But I had to find the meaning of the unknown show.
Have you ever seen a train derail?
The next few months were like a Dickens tale.
Dead broke in the southern slough.
The engine's really not the only thing we blew.
Let's go to Santa Fe,
I think I heard a song that said we'll be okay.
One more line before I finally go.
I see the lights are flashing for the Unknown Show.
