Description
A legendary hero of the American counterculture, Beat poet and activist John Sinclair recorded this CD on tour last year.
You may know John as...
* the manager of seminal avant rockers the MC5
* head of the White Panther Party
* the man railroaded by the government into federal prison for possession of two joints (really, for his activism)
* the subject of John Lennon's song "John Sinclair.
* or maybe, today, as the most beloved DJ on New Orleans' WWOZ.
Well, he's still campaigning for freedom issues, but he's also an electrifying performance poet who sets his brilliant narratives - often about the great figures of jazz and blues - to music.
On this CD recorded on tour in Fall 1999, he's backed by half of psychedelic guitar outfit Devil Gods.
He pays tribute to Thelonius Monk and John Coltrane, Muddy Waters and Ray Charles - and even his late friend from Detroit Henry Normile in the moving "My Buddy."
This is poetry that rocks and travels through outer space.
Poetry you can dance to.
