Description
Squat is a four-piece jazz band based in the Athens/Atlanta area. The band formed while taking jazz improvisation classes under Steve Dancz at the University of Georgia in 1994. The current lineup includes Trey Wright on guitar and piano; Carl Lindberg on bass, percussion and vocals; Tommy Somerville on piano, tenor saxophone, percussion, and vocals; and Darren Stanley on drums and percussion. Local musicians including percussionists Marlon Patton and Carlton Owens and trombonist/pianist Kevin Hyde often augment Squat's lineup.
Musically, Squat is a mostly instrumental ensemble performing originals and standards inspired by a variety of styles including '60's era Blue Note, Bossa Nova, Afro-Cuban, blues, gospel, hip hop, and New Orleans second line. The band's shows are known for their improvisation, energy, and ability to connect with any crowd.
Squat has been a featured performer at the Atlanta Jazz Festival, the Macon Cherry Blossom Festival, the Athens Jazz Festival, the Human Rights Festival, Bel Chere, and Athfest and have opened or headlined with Medeski, Martin, and Wood; String Cheese Incident; Maynard Ferguson; Charlie Hunter; Maceo Parker; the B-52's; Squirrel Nut Zippers; Sector 9; the Derek Trucks Band; and Colonel ruce Hampton.
Squat was voted best jazz band for four years in a row (1999-2002) in the Flagpole Athens Music Awards.
In Fall of 2004, Squat celebrated 10 years together with the release of Recycled 1994-2004 and a 10 year tour. Each show featured a slide show of the band's many haircuts narrated by multi-instrumentalist Tommy Somerville and a bonus disc, Archive Vol.1. The band continues to perform at clubs and wedding throughout the Southeast.
