Description
Neville Meredith and Crisis can be traced back as far as 1985 when he was just 14 years old. He used the band as a channel to vent his pretentious progressive rock (as he likes to describe it) and spent all his free time in recording studios learning the trade.
The band had several line-ups over the years but Meredith never released an album, although some recordings have survived, the best being the track 'Temptress' (recorded in 1992) which was later added to the end of the 2002 album 'Crossover'.
In 1995 after several years working for a London Theatre Company as a sound engineer and later running a Recording Studio and working as a Music Producer Meredith got together with bass player/ drummer Russell Grooms who he had played with in a band called Shuzbutt. Out of all the musicians Meredith worked with on the circuit Grooms was the best. They started recording under the name Crisis, soon to be changed to UK Crisis to avoid confusion with the 100 other bands called Crisis!
Best described as rock/crossover their first album as UK Crisis - 'Adversity' was recorded in a barn during 1995/96 and never really completed, although this gives the album a terrific raw sound and a unique style which continues till this day. Their second album 'Spirit Level' (started in 96 & finally finished in 2000) was a crossover of rock, breakbeat and lo-fi... the tracks 'Cold Dawn' (with guest singer Alanamay) and 'Spirit Level' won several Independent Internet awards and was critically acclaimed like their third album - 'Crossover'.. reviewed by Mark Bayross from Phase 9 Entertainment he says, "Despite being released on singer/songwriter Neville Meredith's own RomanTown music and film label, it's impeccably produced stuff, combining laid-back guitar with expansive, danceable beats and the kind of cool vocal delivery rock stars are made of. Stylistically, the record veers all over the shop, from the Mondays-esque dirty funk of ELLIVEN to the Chemical Brothers-style floor-fillers like FLOATING CITIES and extended trance of GOODBYE ADVERSITY".
'Small Town Prisoner', released in Dec 2004, is the 4th UK Crisis album. The opening track 'Circle' was No5 in the Indie Journal's Top 40 Indie Songs of 2004. The album has been picked up by radio stations and warmly received in the Indy community. UK Crisis have produced their best record yet, returning to their classic/progressive rock roots 'Small Town Prisoner' could be seen as an end of an era for the band but the beginning of a new chapter in this fiercely underground of all underground bands.
