Description
Alcibiades Jones is an improvisatory fusion trio based in New Haven, Connecticut with roots in the jam music of Medeski Martin and Wood and the live trio recordings of Jaco Pastorious. They are releasing their debut LP, Refraction Mirage on their own label, Refraction Mirage Records. Recorded in June 2000 at Blue Jay Studios in Carlisle, Massachusetts, the album captures the intensely focused group improvisations that are the band's area of expertise.
Since recording the album, the band has played periodically in various New England locations, but is planning a series of more publicized dates in the summer of 2005 in support of their first release. Austin Barney (guitar, bass), the group's co-composer, is a surprising hybrid of Slash and Grant Green, a rock guitarist with truly keen ears and funky time. Stuart Watson (bass, guitar), co-composer, is also a student of jazz and rock and draws inspiration especially from the work of Scott Lafaro. Alessandro Zanecchia, just 16 at the time of this recording, is a drummer who mixes diverse break-beat rhythms with the melodic percussiveness of Billy Martin. These disparate influences combine in Alcibiades Jones to create a sound entirely unique and uniquely accessible to jazz and rock fans alike.
The group is currently at work on a new album. While not playing, the members of the group have distracted themselves with schooling; Austin Barney is a student at George Washington University, Stuart Watson is a graduate of Yale University, and Alessandro Zanecchia is a student at Berklee College of Music. Watson also serves as a personal assistant to literary critic and jazz aficionado Harold Bloom. Their next project, tentatively titled Organized Planet, promises to be a mixture of new improvisations and more traditionally arranged music. Look for them in a club near you this summer, and be sure to visit the bands website www.shatteryourleaves.com for dates and more information.
