Description
In a generous review of Equilibrium, Alice Marie's debut EP, Dennis Halsey of BestFemaleMusicians.com wrote, "All I want to know from Alice Marie is when will she give us more music?"
Halsey and other fans need wait no more because Angels Near has arrived with more tracks, more guitars, more Kate-Bush-inspired soundscapes, and more of the soul-searching that attracted thoughtful listeners to Equilibrium.
In the title track, you can hear the rumble of a roller coaster and screams to go with it; listening to the CD as a whole requires some seatbelt-fastening as Alice, an artist featured on Virt Records' Undiscovered Gems, takes you through her lows - molestation, depression, and her response to 9/11 - and highs - summoning her soul mate, appreciating the life she almost took, and getting anything but metaphysical in the seductive "Bring the Guitar."
Makes sense that she'd call the work Angels Near because she conveys an intimate relationship with them and God, whose judgment she questions in the eerie "Could It Be" which ends with an even eerier busy signal.
"If the songs on the first CD had Hollywood endings, these are more like European films," says Alice of the new album. "Not as many neat bows to tie things up."
Alice Marie is often compared to Tori Amos, Stevie Nicks, Natalie Merchant, and even Evanescence, but when it comes to playing live, she's more like the reclusive Kate Bush. Her performances are rare, but with songs this intimate, one need not share a room with her to feel her -- and those angels she hangs out with - very near.
