Description
Andy Hawk is a singer-songwriter living in Frederick, Maryland. His blend of hooky pop belies the serious undertones of his lyrics. You'll hum along and cry at the same time to some of his achingly personal - yet universal - themes: lost love, dealing with the past, leaving your hometown, broken dreams. You'll also relish the bittersweet love songs. His words strike to the heart of what all people must go through in the arc of a life.
Hawk has been writing songs for more than 10 years, but this is his first release. While his work stands on its own, his ultimate goal is to have others cover his material so he can concentrate solely on songwriting. This CD is a big step toward that goal. The disc is selling well at his solo acoustic shows throughout the Maryland-Virginia-D.C. area. He's currently at work on a follow-up. During the day, he's a teacher at Loudoun County High School in Leesburg, Virginia. In June 2004, he was voted by the senior class to be the school's faculty speaker during graduation. Instead of giving a traditional speech, Hawk wrote a song called "Whispers In My Life", which will be included on the next CD, and surprised the seniors by singing it to them. It brought down the house, as students, teachers, administrators, and parents all joined in a standing ovation. He has a deeply loyal following among his current and former students, which is in evidence at the packed coffee house shows he does in the Leesburg area.
"The day I left for college, I listened over and over again to 'Ferris Wheel' and felt that it was written just for me." - Nathan Chiantella, James Madison University student newspaper.
"This is a 'hometown boy makes good' story. The CD is full of catchy tunes. His voice is hard to pin down. It's not a booming rock voice, but vulnerable and true, like maybe Matthew Ryan. The terrific lyrics (I'd say they're his strong suit if the melodies weren't so good too) give the listener many 'wow' moments of clarity. You nod your head to the music, but it could be as an agreement to the words, which make you think he somehow knows things about your life that you've never told anyone." - Jason Miller, Armstrong County Weekly.
