Description
The band ANWR was started by Gary and Don Webster formerly of THE JAILBYRDS. The Band name ANWR came from the acronym of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. There is a lot of oil underneath a small, flat section of ANWR, which is similar to where oil has been recovered on Alaska's North Slope for the past 30 years. The economy of Alaska is dependent upon oil revenues. Furthermore, America is dependent upon other nations for oil - many of which are hostile to American citizens. It is the majority opinion of Alaskans to allow drilling in the small segment of ANWR.
Connie Wilhelm was recruited as a voice heard in the office of a local Anchorage dentist. After hearing the concept, Connie immediately accepted, and wrote the lyrics to ANWR's first song; DRILLING - YES or NO. A conversation with Alaskan Senator Dave Donley lead Gary to Kim Duke at Arctic Power, who linked him up with Joan Massart-Paden, the keyboarder. Joan also brought drummer Bruce Finlay formerly of The SORROWS, a popular band in Europe, and lead guitarist Gene Hall and saxophonist Phil Herndon to the band. DRILLING - YES or NO was recorded and produced by Bruce Finlay. The song's release date was December 23, 2002. ANWR is currently working on the album DRILL, which will be released summer of 2004.
