" Arin's songwriting is influenced by many styles of music including jazz, blues, and folk. Her dynamic and stirring voice is complimented by her intelligent and well crafted lyrics, which will draw you into her songs and make you laugh, cry, and think in the manner of all the great songwriters. Arin is an artist to watch out for. Highly recommended!" -Jazz guitarist, Mimi Fox
Five months after Arin was born in the city of Tehran, Iran, Arin's parents brought her to New York City in pursuit of higher education. This short trip soon became permanent when the Islamic Revolution of '79 drastically swept through Iran. Although Arin adapted to an American way of life in school and with friends, her home was always filled with Armenian and Iranian song and dance, which subtly colors her music today. After studying ballet and classical piano throughout her childhood years, Arin bought a used classical guitar at 17 and started singing. Since then, she has touched her listeners with her ululating vocals and hypnotic melodies, tinted with sounds of the middle-east.
In one breath, Arin sings with the passion and power of Ani Difranco or Fiona Apple, and in the next, she sings you into a dreamy feeling reminiscent of Norah Jones or Sade. Arin first fell in love with the honesty of contemporary and traditional folk greats such as Ani Difranco, Joni Mitchel, Dar Williams, Cat Stevens, and Gillian Welch. Recently, Arin's musical world has opened up to artists such as Susana Baca, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, and Astrud Gilberto. From this wide array of influences, Arin's songwriting emerges with a unique and refreshing style.
"All These Wounds", Arin's debut CD, is a mosaic of breezy folk songs, swampy blues, and latin-jazz grooves. Produce by Mimi Fox (world renound guitarist), and recorded by Jon Evans (Tori Amos), this trio came together to create a sound that is lush yet pure, with swirls of clarinet, jazz guitar, afro-cuban percussion, and accoustic bass. The title track "All These Wounds" tells the story of Arin's journey towards self love. We can heal the world, we can heal eachother, but only by healing our own wounds first, she suggests as she sings "we are leaving behind the tangles of ivy for truth". Arin exposes all of our demons and angels and dances with them in her songs.
"Arin Simonian sings beautiful, poetic songs with a jazz complexity and folk accessibility. A 'sensitive songwriter' in the best sense of the term, her smooth as cream soprano wraps itself around strong images and addictive melodies against her gorgeous guitar textures. A little bit Joni Mitchell, a little bit early Ani Difranco, a little bit Astrud Gilberto." -Singer-songwriter, Green
"Arin's breathy jazz-folk ululations are a highlight [of "Best of Berkeley" CD compilation]."
-East Bay Express
"A combination of blues, folk, jazz, and Latin influences with a striking vocal style equals a performance not to be missed!"
-Joan Pez, Producer
"A combination of Jewel and Rickie Lee Jones. Her songs are hook-free streams of consciousness with good lyrics."
-Eugene Weekly
