******************
Ilene Adar grew up in the Washington, DC area and began playing guitar as a teenager. Her early influences were Joni Mitchell and Bonnie Raitt, women who combine emotional honesty with riveting musicality in their songwriting and performances. She kept her music as a private source of pleasure and solace, though, and instead began her professional career as a visual artist, focusing her work on freeing her creativity. After the death of her brother and birth of her daughter she felt moved to tell personal and universal stories in a way that only music could express. She began writing songs and performing in San Francisco, Berkeley, and Marin County, California; her debut album, First Sound, was released in September 2002. Featuring the title track, semi-final award-winner in the 2001 international Songs Inspired By Literature contest, First Sound gives voice to the passions, grief, and joys of the human condition. With recurring themes of love, loss, and redemption, backed by spare yet moving instrumentals and harmonies, Ilene's 11 original songs and crystalline voice evoke mystery and a deep sense of spirit.
