Description
Salamander came together in the wake of the Seattle rock explosion in 1993, originally looking to East Coast jam bands like Blues Traveler, Phish, and the Spin Doctors as well as older hippies like the Allman Brothers for influence.
In hindsight, they now sound like an early version of Incubus, not leaning so heavy on the metal. The band was often compared to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as to Jethro Tull (probably because of the flute).
The band developed a loyal following around the highly organic University District house party scene, then headed to the downtown rock clubs as their sound matured and began to include harder elements of hip-hop and funk.
Salamander would often play two sets a night, throwing in covers and stretching songs in excess of 20 minutes. Percussionist Donovan Curry referred to it as "Choose Your Own Adventure Music".
Drummer-singer Ryan Link went on to front Boston power-pop band Miss Fortune in 1999, and is now starring as Roger Davis in the Broadway production of RENT, a long-running rock opera. Please visit ryanlink.com for the latest news.
Bassist Justin Cayou now plays in a Cuban-Brazilian rhythmic experience called Quasi Nada (quasinada.com), based in Seattle. He occasionally jams with Curry, as well as with Salamander guitarists Brian Sullivan and Bennett Keasey, who recently visited Link in New York.
Flautist and 2nd vocalist Mark Oppenneer continues to write and produce original music from his home studio in upstate New York. See mythinking.net for more info.
Guitarists Brian Sullivan and Bennett Keasey are living in Seattle and threatening to collaborate with Link in a future project.
