Description
The debut recording from pianist/composer Matthew Labarge varies between serene and exuberant, but always with a touch of deeply romantic introspection. It seems as a collection of intimate short stories- narrative, each complete in and of itself and distinct, yet, on the whole, pieces of a larger story.
Those familiar with his classical works may be surprised at the simplicity of the melodies and forms here, but repeated listening reveals great sophistication in overall development as the album progresses. Recurring themes in drastically varying contexts, revealing key relationships, and carefully disguised dissonances -- three of his signature devices -- are used here to full effect.
A remarkable debut recording, First Fall Night seems destined to become a classic.
