Thoughts on Get Lucky by Terry Teachout:
I LIKE SMART MUSIC, the kind that doesn't tell you everything it knows the first time you hear it. I like uncategorizable music that can't be squeezed into smug little pigeonholes. I like serious music that isn't afraid to be funny-and vice versa. If that's what you like, too, then you've come to the right band, and the right album. Or, to put it another way, you just got lucky.
From the Press Release:
As The Lascivious Biddies' unconventional arrangements of original compositions and standards-to-be blur the line between pop, jazz and cabaret styles, the group has been able to bring their distinctive sound to many different kinds of venues, including such venerable institutions as Joe's Pub (New York NY), The Bluebird Cafe (Nashville TN) and The Kennedy Center (Washington DC). In addition to their nightclub appearances, the girls continue to be featured on the roster of Carnegie Hall's Neighborhood Concert Series.
Over the years they have played together, The Lascivious Biddies have earned a reputation for having an energetic and tightly woven live show, full of laughter, vivacity and a dash of sentimentality. The ladies have captured a true taste of their unique flavor in The Lascivious Biddies' sophomore release, Get Lucky.
Get Lucky begins with a quartet of tunes that somehow, through their diversity, seem to define The Lascivious Biddies' sound and identity. The record opens with Betty, a hard swinging love song to New York City. Second is Ask, a cover of the Smiths 1987 classic reworked with much sweetness and four-part harmonies. Then comes Texas Girl, a western romp that bounces the listener into Salt, a slow, sexy, tongue-in-cheek tango treating the ancient and ubiquitous seasoning.
With this latest release Get Lucky, following their critically lauded debut Biddi-luxe! (2002), The Lascivious Biddies are armed and ready for another, bigger, better cycle of playing and singing across the country.
